Recommend a Diabetes forum?

Post by ChrisD » Fri Aug 22, 2014 11:14 am

Can anyone recommend a good Diabetes forum? Specifically a Type 2 Diabetes forum. Just got the news today that I crossed the line i've danced around for a long time.

I feel as overwhelmed with this as I did when I first came here seeking an understanding of OSA / xPAP over two years ago. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris

Welcome to the club! I joined the type 2 club in January of this year. I joined the diabetes forum at the American Diabetes Association website http://community.diabetes.org/t5/Main-C ... ort-Forums . You can take a look around, very nice and quite helpful. If you like it, register and put down as much information as you can about yourself like A1c level, medications etc. and someone will be quick to point you in the right direction.

Good luck on your new journey.

Dale

tudiabetes.org is similar to cpaptalk.org in some ways.
Lots of posts, helpful people, etc.

It is a much more robust website.
Subforums (much needed by diabetics because of the different complexities -- type 1, type 2, pumps, etc.)
Blogs

The ADA site is a good one. Good luck with your quest. I can sympathize.....I am also a borderline Type 2. Diagnosed 5 years ago the same week I got layed off from my job at the ripe old age of 55. Being layed off gave me an outstanding chance to totally change my lifestyle and get back on the treadmill.

Five years later I am >30 pounds lighter and working again.....I stayed off the drugs for a while but now I am taking Metformin and Simvastatin and I've kind of stabilized at the borderline. I've given up a lot of gratuitous sugar (no soda of any kind). It's really not so bad if you can keep on top of things.

I was just sent here to cpaptalk to learn more about sleep apena from my usual haunt, diabetesforum.com. So that's one more option, very friendly and supporting of controlling diabetes though diet.

Chris,

I'm sorry you've "crossed that line" but the fact that there was a line to cross tells me that you were getting the conventional wisdom from your doctor (eat low fat, exercise more, etc.) for quite some time. You will get more of the same from an ADA forum, and you already know how well that turned out.

I second the forum Daytona recommended http://www.diabetesforum.com (NOT diabetesforumS.com).
Diabetes forum.com is all about learning to keep your blood sugar under control by diet, using medications only if absolutely necessary, and about caring for your body to avoid any further progression of this disease.

You may want to start out reading Blood Sugar 101: http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/. It's NOT the standard diabetes advice, but it works. It's based on the book The Diabetes Solution by Richard K. Bernstein, M.D. Eye opening, life saving reading!
