Pressure on Phillips Respironics Suddenly CRAZY High!

Post by WhatMeSnore » Sat Aug 23, 2014 12:49 am

For the last few nights, while my Phillips Respironics BiPap unit reads the correct max pressure (21), it's obviously WAY too high. Once it ramps up to 21, it suddenly feels like the air is going to come out my ears, and in order to keep the mask from leaking I have to tighten the straps so tight I have a sore on the back of my neck. But as I say, the pressure's so high it's like I'm on one of those gravity training centrifuge things astronauts train on. My mouth is forced wide open from the blast. So something has to be wrong.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this happen before? It was fairly comfortable before this. I tried unplugging it and plugging it back in but no dice. I have a call in to the DME and someone's going to call back tomorrow, but not much chance of sleep tonight.

I've also tried a different type of mask just to see, and it was still just as bad.

Any error messages in the LCD?
I bought a "never used" machine (REMstar Pro 2) in 2010 and the first time I masked up and turned it on, it about blew my mask off.......come to find out it had a broken (small) hose nipple inside the machine and couldn't regulate the pressure. But, it definitely had an error message on the screen. It also had a dead battery. I got the parts to fix it and it has been running great ever since.
I would definitely have the DME check it out. Sounds like something broke or failed inside.

No error messages. A guy from the DME is coming tomorrow to check the pressure. I tried it out again last night to make sure something seemed wrong - I'm SURE. My ears popped from just a few seconds holding the mask up to my nose and mouth.

Turned out there was nothing wrong with the unit - the DME swapped it for a new one and it's the same. I guess it was just psychological, and I've mostly gotten used to it again. I spoke to my sleep doctor, and he's having them change the pressure from 21 to 20. Not sure that'll make a noticeable difference, but he didn't want to lower it any more than that.

One unrelated thing is that I don't think the DME had given me a new unit before, and the new one is really new. I saw him unbox it and it has the stickers on it, etc. Also, it had a newer version of the operating system (v3.04 vs. v3.03) so at least I got a bit of an upgrade. Also an extra filter, which is good since it was me who has the problem with my kittens removing them!
