A cpap machine blows straight air. You set the machine at 14 l/min, and it blows 14 l/min all night. An apap machine can be operated under the cpap mode or the apap mode. In the apap mode you set two pressures: a lower pressure and a upper pressure. The machine will run at the lower pressure all night until it detects an apnea. It will then "ramp up" to treat the apnea. Once the apnea is treated, the machine will reduce to the lower number. It's a personal preference thang. I would request an apap, so I can run it in any mode I want.

Yes, insurance covers APAP capable machines just like straight cpap mode machines. The insurance companies pay by billing codes and not cpap vs apap. An APAP capable machine is a cpap machine with auto adjusting pressure mode in addition to cpap mode..
HCPCS billing code for either is E0601.

Hope they don't want to give the S9 Auto Escape. That one is an APAP machine but it has very limited data available on it. Only offers AHI. No leak data, no AHI event category breakdown or anything that might be needed.

Unless you live in Canada, then it gets sticky.
