Respironics Trilogy recall

Post by JDS74 » Thu Feb 20, 2014 5:55 am

Just posted in MedPage Today this morning.

The Trilogy line of mechanical ventilators is being recalled due to a faulty component that could lead to failure without warning, device maker Philips Respironics announced.

The voluntary recall of about 600 units -- models 100, 200, and 202 shipped between Dec. 31, 2013, and Jan. 30, 2014 -- stemmed from a potentially defective component on the power management board.

"If this issue is not corrected it is possible that the ventilator may fail to deliver mechanical breaths and that the alarm functionality may be reduced to indicate ventilatory failure, resulting in serious adverse health consequences or death," a press release from the company warned.

However, no deaths or serious injury related to the faulty part have yet been reported, it noted.

The recalled units had been shipped to the U.S. as well as France, Britain, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Korea, Kuwait, the Netherlands, and Singapore.

Adverse reactions experienced with the device may be reported to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program, according to the company.

For some of the CPAPtalk members who may have concerns about this recall, it should be pointed out that the Trilogy line is sold primarily to Sleep Clinics, it's very rare for a typical xPAP user to have one. The Trilogy is used to provide selective therapies to a patient and then collect sleep data. It can provide straight CPAP, AutoPAP, BiLevel and ASV therapies as required. It's extremely rare to find a member who uses one, although there is one lady who frequently contributes to CPAPtalk who owns one... I don't remember who it is, but I do remember she has some special pulmonary issues.

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

Good comment on the rarity of this machine.
I only know of one member on this board that uses one but I thought it possible there were more.

Totally correct. She needs to give her two cents worth... that is, if she's heard about this recall issue. I'll send her a PM ASAP.

The units in question were apparently sold over a very short time frame. Liability means a great deal to this company.
I have no doubt the defective machines are under scrutiny, if not already on the bench, undergoing repairs.

Sorry I'm late on this. My Trilogy was built in late 2009 and given to me in February 2010. All of the recalls I've heard about on the machines haven't affected mine. Unless my machine is under the recall, my DME doesn't tell me.

I believe I am the only PARTICIPATING cpaptalk.com member that uses a Trilogy anyway.

But it's good to post the information in case there are Trilogy LURKERS watching the forum.

Hi Madalot,

Glad to hear you are still with us.
I remember your posting about some sort of upgrade so I thought it might be useful to post just in case.

Yes, I'm still here. In all my glory. LOL

It's interesting that you bring up the upgrade. I don't know if a problem like that would also be included in an existing machine that got an upgrade. My machine WAS upgraded late last year.

I would think (hope??) that if the upgraded units were also in need of a recall, they'd notify the DME who owns it (and rents it to me).

I think I'll ask though -- just to be on the safe side.

Thanks.

My husband uses a Trilogy 100 due to central sleep apnea. It is used in the home only at night with a bleed of 1L. of O2. We have not been told of any recalls but I do need to ask since the DME company has not notified us. Thanks for info.

Hello all! I do not use the trilogy as an autopap suites my needs just fine but I will tell you I work for a DME company who provides numerous pts. with Trilogys. All equipment like this is tracked by serial number and rest assure that your DME will contact you immediately if your equipment is involved in any recalls such as this one. This should apply to CPAP and Bipap equipment as well!

ValAlex:
Thanks for the information about how DME's handle this type of situation.
My post was in the nature of belt and suspenders comment just to make sure that if someone got missed at the DME level, they had a second chance to see the recall notice.
