quattro air vs mirage quattro vs ultra mirage

Post by coffee_addict » Tue Aug 19, 2014 2:09 pm

HI,

I have a medium quattro fx and have had to got to a small size headgear just to get the thing tight enough to not leak.
As I've tightened more and more the headgear rides down in the back to my neck and things just get worse.

I'm realizing I probably need to go back to something with straps attaching to a forehead piece which is fine, I don't really care about the better visibility, wearing glasses etc that the quattro fx gives you - but I really have appreciated that its been very comfortable for the most part.

So my question is - what are the significant differences between the 3 masks I listed from Resmed and which is best against leaks and best for comfort?

Any other useful info would be great too such as where do these masks fall historically and whether one is supposed to be an improvment on another etc.

Thanks,
Tom

I can't speak to all three, but I have and have used the original Quattro Full Face and the Ultra Mirage Full Face......and prefer the UMFF. I found the Quattro (at least the one I got) to be just a tad bit larger/longer then the UMFF (I normally use a size Large but have some UMFFs in Medium and they work, too.) I just never really felt as comfortable with the Quattro as I did with the UMFF. The original Quattros also had a leakage problem in the elbow in the front of the mask, too, that needed to be sealed with plumbers Teflon tape.

In general, any full face mask that's not properly sized or adjusted can be problematic.

I have used Quattro Air and now use the AirFit F10, Resmed's newest mask.

@coffeeaddict: If the mask is too tight or too loose you can expect more leaks. Try loosening a little bit at time until you find a place that is comfortable without leaking, if you get too loose and start leaking again then ease back up to your comfort point. When I started on Quattro Air at the beginning of CPAP therapy, I could not control leaks even after I did the above, and then I learned about mask liners. I bought some, and they were a game changer for me! I rarely have leaks or get into large leak territory, but when I do they don't wake me. Another advantage of liners for some people is the protection they offer from facial irritation or contact dermatitis. You can get them from Karen at http://www.padacheek.com, or from our forum sponsors at https://www.cpap.com. You can find RemZzzz liners at cpap.com or many DMEs.

@Den: Where 's your equipment info? I used to see it, and today it's gone!

Well, been using mine (see below) for years, but that doesn't mean it will work for others... you really need to try them yourself. One problem with mine is that where the hose attaches to the mask (directly at that point) is a pretty fiddly and complex little plastic doohickey and I've had to replace a lot of those as they can break easily. Otherwise, no trouble.

It's in my profile under my (logged in) user name "Wulfman", if you go to the member list and sort it by number of posts, you'll find me near the top. Or, if you find one of my logged in posts.

But, here it is so you won't have to look it up:

(4) REMstar Autos w/C-Flex & (6) Pro 2 CPAPs w/C-Flex - Pressure Setting=12 cm (straight CPAP)
"Passover" Humidification - ResMed Ultra Mirage FF - Encore Pro w/Card Reader & MyEncore software - Chiroflow pillow

Are we (Julie and I) the only two who are still proudly using our UMFF masks?

Yeah, been using mine for over nine years......same original one with some replacement headgear and one replacement seal.
The only part that broke on mine is the forehead support when I dropped it on a hard floor. Krazy Glue did OK for a couple of years, but I finally bought a couple of new ones for replacements.

I have a total of four UMFFs in Large and three in Medium (I can wear both sizes but the Large is a little more comfortable).
But, I mainly use the one I started out with in May of 2005.

Oops.
I neglected to mention that I only had to buy the forehead supports and not complete masks. That's one of the nice things about the UMFF.......all the parts are replaceable.

Its saving grace! I think yours doesn't break like mine because of how you sleep (or how I sleep).
