Need a Recording Oximeter for Sleepyhead

Post by OldLincoln » Fri Aug 01, 2014 7:39 pm

My machine/mask screwed up big time last night and I was messed up until 3PM today. I've put it off long enough so I am definitely getting an oximeter. Since I am decided on the fact I need help deciding which one. Sleepyhead states CMS50(x) but Pugsy says some but not all.

I "think" I've narrowed it down to either the CMS50E or CMS50F (wrist). They are supposed to be the same except the F is a wrist unit with small finger thing and +$50. Only thing going for it I see is that I'm a tosser/turner and slap the headboard now and then. Against the "F" is the plug to the finger. Why in heaven would they make that at right angles?!! How do you keep it from breaking off.

Okay, Now you know my delima and I'm hoping some of you folks have the experience I need before I buy. Please advise away.

Edit: Gezz, I wrote "Against the "F" is the plug to the finger. Why in heaven would they make that at right angles?!! How do you keep it from breaking off." Proof I didn't have oxy to the brain last night!! I just looked at the pic again and saw the gizmo on a wrist with the cable going straight down the top of the hand to the finger. Funny, the pic off the wrist showed it going off to the side!

Okay I read the link to pulseoxstore.com and is states: "We still have the older style CMS-50F unit available as well as the new version. The old version is compatible with Sleepyhead!" Is the NEW version of the CMS50F NOT compatible with SleepyHead??

I have been using the 50F (white face, or old style) for about a year now. If you have read any of my posts you will know I have REM sleep behavior disorder, so there are night where I literately jump out of bed - although not so much lately - and I have had no trouble with the connector. I never take it apart and use a cotton swab to clean the inside of the probe every few months.

I would buy another without thinking if mine ever broke for some reason. After 1 year with no trouble, battery life is way longer than what I need. Run it all night every night and charge it the next day attached to the computer...

Thanks, pbriggs. Darn good personal experience review and I'm leaning pretty hard. Love to hear other experiences. Don't be shy (silly me this is CPAPTALK - what's shy about us?)

Quick question if you don't mind? Don't want to hijack the thread but perhaps it will pertain to the OP as well one way or another?

IS it a MUST that these are to be worn on the left hand/wrist?
And if not, how would it be on the right one?

I have one of these smart phone watches that I have to wear at nighttime so i don't have to get out of bed if its an urgent call or text.......cant wear it on the right.
IF this one can be worn on the right, although i might feel like something out of Star Trek at that point, then I could use it.....please let me know if you believe it would work as well on the right OR is there some medical reason I see all the photos with them on the left, other than just assuming everyone wears watches on the left?

i am about to buy one and haven't really decided which one yet.. ( a bit harder to find one to ship here to Canada without having to wait 3 weeks out of China)

Pulse oximeters can be worn on either hand/wrist.

I used the CMS 50 D Plus a couple of times and then sold it. If someone just wants to check the O2 every now and then the cheapest will work. If a person thinks that they may want to check the O2 more regularly than the wrist model might be more comfortable.
Be careful if you get the latest CMS 50 F....and want to use SleepyHead...it won't work with SleepyHead yet.
You want the older version 50F if you want SleepyHead to work with it.

thanks, as usual, your great advice, that always hits it right on the nail, just made the choice easier........as I will likely use it once or twice only, per year.....

thanks

After my experience last night and others a while back I think if the oximeter as like my backup power unit for CPAP. I go along for a month or so then find out one day a power outage happened during the night. I know when my appliance clocks are flashing in the morning. BTW, that's also why I set my machine to auto-start. If the power went off and came back in a few minutes would your machine start back up? If my O2 dropped below 80 I hope this meter alarm will wake me.

That's one of the reasons I also use the auto start feature. Have done that with all the machines I have ever used.
But the few times we have lost power...I always have woke up before it comes back on. The silence wakes me up.
Can't go back to sleep with power off. Normally if it out..it's out because of thunderstorm and I can't go back to sleep until things settle down.
I also just like having the machine come on after a couple of breaths. I put the mask on...quickly get it situated and take a couple of breaths and it comes on. I do turn it off manually though. Habit mostly. That and I don't like that brief leak spike before it can turn itself off as that spike messes with the leak graph scale.

Agree Pugsy, when I got my brand new System One it first came on auto-start. A few nights later I made a quick bathroom run in the middle of the night, came back to bed and sleep immediately (meds). Woke up next morning like today headache, thick head, walk unsteady, mind slow and I don't even drink. I called my DME who ordered a replacement (after escalations) and used my old machine till it came in. The must have checked this one out because it auto-starts better than any before. Sometimes even before I get the mask clipped in.

Mine is on auto-start as well but there was talk in a thread a week or so ago about how the FF masks don't always work on the auto-start.

Mine does work most of the time but there have been a couple when it didn't but admittedly it seemed to happen only in the beginning when I switched from a Nasal mask to a FF one.
When I saw people mention that the FF doesn't always work that way, I double-checked to make sure it was on auto set and it was.........but after 2 or 3 times, since then, it has worked.

Now, ONE thing I might have done wrong but don't have any way of knowing if I did it or not, was that when I first switched to the FF mask from the nasal, I might not have switched the mask type in my S9 AutoSet.

Wondering IF that might be why some have said the FF mask doesn't always start up? Or is there some other reason i am unaware of?

Smart Start to auto start with the S9 has been known to be a bit problematic at lower pressures. Most often with nasal pillows and pressures below 7 cm. Especially if a person tends to be a rather "meek" or "shallow" breather. The machine can't sense the changes to realize a human is now attached to the mask and is breathing.
On the older models (S8 and older) those machines were known to have problems sensing breathing with full face masks and for that reason smart start option was grayed out and not available when a person had chosen a full face mask. Sp it was a well known fact with the S8 and older machines that the machine couldn't sense breathing well enough with auto on to get it to kick on.
I haven't heard of many problems with FFM users now with the S9 and auto start. It wouldn't be impossible though if the pressure was on the low side.
So with FFM it isn't impossible but it would be uncommon.
Now with the nasal pillow masks and due to such a small area for air movement...it's common enough that it is mentioned in the manual....it says something like "smart start" auto on/off may not work correctly when pressures are below 7 cm...and since a lot of people use the ramp which is 4 cm...it doesn't work so great.

See the instructions set in my signature lines below. They apply to the CMS-50E and the old CMS-50F (has a white case) which is what I've been using with SleepyHead without problems for well over a year. The new version (has a blue case) is incompatible with SleepyHead right now and the instructions below won't help.

So your choice is between the CMS-50E and the old CMS-50F. I think both of them will serve you well. The company(ies) that continues to sell the old F model is using good judgment imo and will hopefully revise their new model to also use similar software as the old for compatibility with SleepyHead and its many users.

Unless you plan to check your oxygen every night (few of us do), the E should be fine. For steady nightly use, I would opt for the old F model if you want to insert your pule-ox graphs into SH in a time synchronized manner. Hope this helps.

the latest version of sleepyhead (0.9.7) works with the cms50I also... I sent jedimark the files that are created and he added the ability for it to read the files created by spo2 assistant 2.4.

with luck, it'll soon be able to import directly.

The New version of the CMS 50 F is NOT compatible at this time with SleepyHead. Unknown time frame for having it be compatible.
This is state on the pulseoxstore website...the newer model is shown first and it says "not compatible with SleepyHead" and right below it they talk about the older version that is compatible....so if you are liking the 50 F model...make sure you know which one you are wanting.

Oh...everyone...0.9.7 SleepyHead is not available for general public trial at this time. It's not ready for release yet so don't go asking...sorry.

I ordered the new model of the 50F even though it isn't yet compatible with Sleepyhead. The included software will alow me to review the record and I can manually compare them. I like the features to much to get locked into the old model.
