RX for Life?

Post by Pesser » Tue Jul 29, 2014 4:45 pm

Can you get a RX that will always be effective? I am asking because I want to forever avoid any sleep study. Thanks!

My Rx on file at CPAP.com says "lifetime duration (99 months)." I'm not sure whether this is in case there is a legal limitation on the term of prescriptions in some jurisdictions, or what.

Mine too but it does not specify the replacement period for the machine itself, yours?

I live in Canada and I think the rules are a little different. I am not interested in the insurance companies’ requirements. I am only interested in the medical industry requirement. Even a home study is scary. A home study that would last a week would have the chance of being at least a little accurate. In the absence of sustained home study I cannot place any faith in a one night thing! It would be nice to have an RX for life and avoid the mafia.

I've no intention of buying future machines through my insurance company anyway, so I can buy a new machine (or, indeed, presumably any reasonable number of machines) whenever I want. The sleep doctor doesn't get to decide how often your insurance will pay for your machine, anyway.

My insurance company in the US tells me they have contracts with each DME that set replacement timing. I can't seem to get to the bottom of it though. Frustrating.

I hope you have longer than 99 months to live, The Latinist!! I would ask for it to be written for at least 120 months (10 years), and maybe even 240 months! I hope even that is shorter than my lifetime!

Doing a little research, it seems that in medical prescribing a term of 99 months is used to indicate a prescription with a lifetime duration. It seems that it may be a particular requirement of Medicare.

Never heard that before - may be I need to get out more? Or stop being so goshdarned literal Thanks for the research, though!

The medical mafia is working hard to limit the duration of prescriptions so they can ring the cash register on yearly office visits. Sometimes by just writing them that way, sometimes by "policy" with various suppliers, sometimes by giving people the idea that that's the law, and they might even be making it the law in some cases.

Maybe this is how Medicare is planning to remain solvent--projecting that its patients' remaining lifespans will be 99 months.
