REM related OSA

Post by Chelle25 » Sat Jul 26, 2014 3:53 pm

When I was diagnosed I was told I had mild sleep apnea and that it was REM related. The doc said mine was happening during the REM dream stage.

Is anyone familiar with this type of OSA? I was told CPAP might work for this kind but it might not. So far the CPAP seems to give me some improvement but not totally. I feel more rested but I am still getting up at night like 4-5 times and it does seem that my dreams wake me up.

It is not that uncommon. REM sleep is very deep sleep.
You have a data capable machine so you should be able to see all you night in great detail.

Is you apnea obstructive or central?

Cpap machines treat those too. Some people refer to them as apnea wannabees.

I would really install Sleepyhead software and see in detail what is happening during the night.

Are you saying to install sleepyhead onto my computer? And also will the sd card from my sleep mapper software work with sleepyhead?

Thanks in advance..... All new to this.

You can install SleepyHead on your computer it is FREE! SleepyHead gives you a minute by minute view of what is happening while you sleep as recorded by your cpap machine.

SleepyHead will read the sd card from cpap machine. SleepyHead is separate from sleep mapper. SleepyHead gives more detail informaiton.

I wish you well

The SD card from the PR System One machine works fine with SleepyHead.

REM worse OSA? I have it myself. It's actually fairly common. During my sleep study my AHI in non REM sleep was only 12 per hour but in REM sleep it went to 53 per hour.

Let's look at your software reports showing the detailed data. See if anything stands out that could stand improvement.
It may just be that you need more time adjusting to sleeping with all this stuff on the face and head. It may be that other issues are still being a factor in wake ups but hurts nothing to look at other possible issues while giving it time.

How to post images of your detailed reports explained here along with some examples.
SleepyHead information in my signature line.

I've read discussion here that during REM sleep the body's protective measure while dreaming is to be unable to move. That loss of muscle tone (not a scientific description) is thought to be the reason for apneas (and hypopneas) being more prominent during REM. REM sleep is so important to our well being. Managing the OSA is still important even if it's only certain parts of the night. You might want to check your sleep study report to see if there was a positional component to your breathing. What position do you sleep in? If your testing was while supine, maybe side or stomach sleeping would reduce your events even further. If your events are totally in REM your choices are to sleep all night at a pressure that prevents your events, or use an auto titrating delivery that will keep you at a lower pressure until the need for more pressure happens. Once you have confirmed your treatment is indeed therapeutic, if frequent wakeups continue you may want to check for some other common sleep disruptors such as medication side effective, some medical conditions, caffiene intake, or other sleep disruptors like limb movements. Good luck going forward as you sort through this.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll download the sleepy head today after I get my chores done here.

I usually sleep on my side because if I sleep on my back I get events. Problem is I love sleeping on my back sometimes and I do notice that is when my pressure goes up to 14 and I awaken with leaks.

I am on a medication that has sedative properties which I have heard are no good for OSA but I have no choice I have to take it.

I am really curious to see what this sleepyhead reports. Will try and get this downloaded.

Thanks for the help

Your medication may require a bit of attention.
As your body gets used to sleeping without the excess stress hormones associated with apnea,
the effect of your meds may vary, and you may need to speak to your doctor regarding this.
Please do not adjust any medication without consulting with your doctor.
You may find a mask liner (Pad-a-cheek, Rem-zzz's) will help with leak-related arousals while on your back.

I have the same thing. But mine was diagnosed as moderate to severe. The CPAP works for me. I sleep through thunderstorms and all other sorts of noises.
When I wake up, I have no memory of any dreams. I know we dream every night. But I don't remember any of them when I wake up in the morning
