Am I suppose to feel like this?

Post by Bree » Fri Jul 25, 2014 2:38 pm

Hello I just started using my Resmed S9 with nasal cushion yesterday the most horrifying experience in my life. I felt as though I was chocking, because I went into a coughing fit to make a long story short I took the nasal cushion off and went to sleep without it. I know for a fact that I breath through my nose when I am awake and I must breathe with my mouth when I am sleeping because my mouth and throat are always dry when I wake up. I feel nasal congestion most of the time. What can I do so I can sleep and feel energized ? HELP PLEASE

There are a number of people on here who have a lot of experience and will be able to help. However, please click on "user control panel" (upper left of the screen) and complete your profile listing your equipment (brand and model of machine and mask). Also post the basic results from your sleep study and your prescribed machine settings.

In order to follow Nick's suggestions you'll need to register on the forum first. It's a good idea to post your mask and equipment like he said, so we can tailor our feedback to your specific situation. Posting your sleep study report may not be necessary just yet.

Don't draw any conclusions based on your first night -- it's a very rare individual who has a fabulous -- or even decent -- first night!

You may have to experiment with different masks, different levels of humidification, adjusting the Ramp feature, etc. Once we know which exact mask and machine (make and model) you have we can start making suggestions. If you can tell us what pressure(s) your machine is set to, that will be helpful too.

Thank You @ Nick I updated the everything so anyone who knows about this particular machine can help me in any way they can it is greatly appreciated. The machine was set by the tech via Dr. recommendation. To try and get use to the equipment I even tried placing it on my face while I was still awake , because I sometimes will fall asleep watching the television. I think I may have slept with it on my face for about five hours before I got up to use thr restroom and didn't place it back on for the remaineder of the night.

Try less (or no) humidity for a couple of nights, but if it makes things worse, try more... some of us don't use the humidifier at all, and some need it a lot - also depends on where you live and the season, because someone in Arizona or Colo. will probably want more, and those in Fla. a lot less.

Bree, if you want to get more familiar with the features and options for your machine, you can use the link in my signature box to a brief video tutorial on the S9 Autoset.

Good idea, many people find that wearing the mask while watching television helps them get more comfortable with it. If I were you, I would get the Sleepyhead software at http://sourceforge.net/projects/sleepyhead/ You can load the files from your SD card to get additional information regarding your treatment. Pugsy and Robysue are both very good at analyzing those results and can give you good advice based on what the graphs show. Among other things the software will help you know how effective the treatment is and whether you are experiencing excessive leaks (due, for example, to mouthbreathing). If you are mouthbreathing, then you can either stick with the nose mask and use a headstrap (that's the approach I use) or you can switch to another type of mask (for example, a full face mask or a hybrid mask).
