Mouth breathing

Post by Joedaddi » Thu Jul 24, 2014 9:31 am

I am on day three of CPAP use and I'm having a couple issues, mouth breathing and aerophagia. I know after I fall asleep I'm breathing through my mouth and wake up numerous times with severe dry mouth. I wear a chin strap and that doesn't help. Any suggestions? I'm using a Resmed S9 Elite CPAP w/H5i humidifier, pressure is set at 17.

Switch to a Full Face mask and increase your humidity.

Currently I'm using a Mirage Activia LT nasal mask. I'm stuck with that for the next 5 weeks until I return to the Dr. for evaluation. What will increasing the humidity accomplish?

Is the S9 Elite one of the bricks - no data but compliance hours?
If so, return it and get a full data machine.

Do you breathe through you nose at night? If you do, the a FFM may solve the problem. Increase the humidity setting on your machine and use a Climateline hose if you have one to limit rainout. If you don't have one, either get one or get extra insulation for your hose..

if you don't know, then why bring it up?

and, no, it's the escape models that should be avoided.

I breath through my nose when I fall asleep, however, I wake with air rushing out of my mouth and dry mouth. I fall back asleep fairly easily, but within 30-60 minutes it happens again. I'm not certian of the data capture ont he unit I'm using, but I will find out when I get home. Would a FFM also help with aerophasia?

I have always used a FFM as I am a mouth breather. While I have occasionally burped when I sit up, I have not had anything worse than that. I have a high pressure but use a BiPap which makes it a lot easier, never used just a CPap so I don't know if that would be different.

The S9 Elite is the Cpap version of the S9 Autoset. It has all the data just like the Autoset.

I was having that problem too. I tried a chin strap, which didn't,t seem to do anything. After a week or too, I mostly didnt have the problem any more. I think I learned to either keep my young planted on the roof of my mouth while asleep or at least not wake up fully when I had a mouth leak. I,d gige it a few weeks. Untried a FFM and it was a disaster. Leaks kept me awake all night.

Agree, try a nasal mask, you might be surprised that you can adapt. I surprised myself.

Ok, I registered and now you can see the equipment I'm using. I don't think the chin strp is helping me much and will probably stop using it. I do currently use a nasal mask. Why wouldn't a FFM help prevent mouth breathing? Also, I'm not sure if I have the Auto-set or the Elite.

FFMs help mouth breathing all the time, you just have to find the right mask for you, in the right size, fitted properly, and not overtightened.

What's the issue with the Escape model? That's actually what I ahve and was told that it is the latest and greatest they have.

it's a brick, it's the bottom of the line, the cheapest and least capable of the 12+ models that resmed makes.

it detects and records no useful information *at all*. you have no way to know whether it's working right, giving you enough, or too much air for your needs, anything....

run, don't walk, back to whoever lied to you, and demand they replace it with an autoset.
