Resmed S9 VPAP Auto setting questions
Resmed S9 VPAP Auto setting questions
I was issued this machine and have been doing my own settings. The unit is running in the "S" mode. My pressures are 15/11. I experience not breathing very often and the machine doesn't seem to pick up for me and get me to breathe. I see there are two functions on the machine that can be set but do not understand what they mean. The first one is called the, "Trigger" and the second one is called the, "Cycle." They both can be set to either: very low/low/med/high and very high. Can someone here is knowledgeable about this let me know in detail what these are for and how they will affect me? So what I'm wanting to effect is for the machine to cause me to breathe when I go too long NOT breathing. I hope I've said this well. If not, ask me, eh?
I should add here that maybe what I'm wanting comes from one of the other settings. Let me know.
One other note, I am able to put my machine into VAuto mode and I'm reading in the setup manual that THIS will detect when I'm having a CSA. Now then, if this be true, I see on my machine a setting called "PS." It currently is set to "3." What does this mean?

Re: Resmed S9 VPAP Auto setting questions
Did you go over the clinician manual for your machine. See here how to get it:

Re: Resmed S9 VPAP Auto setting questions
Yes, I do have it, but it doesn't give me enough info regarding how all of these settings are done.
Re: Resmed S9 VPAP Auto setting questions
While the S9 VPAP (in any mode) does detect and flag central apneas it doesn't treat central apneas. It doesn't breathe for you and can't force you to breathe. It isn't a ventilator and can't work like one.
Can you please post an image of a typical detailed nightly report?
PS is pressure support and is just the difference between inhale and exhale.

Exhale pressure lowering is called EPR on ResMed machines.
I am not sure what the OP's actual diagnosis was - this seems to be a major miscommunication between the Doctor and the Hardware supplier.

Re: Resmed S9 VPAP Auto setting questions
DAG, Trigger and Cycle are explained on page 5 of the clinician manual (not the patient manual) for your S9 VPAP Auto. Do you have the clinician manual?
Trigger = How sensitive is the machine to the start of your inhale, and thus how quickly does it start switching to your IPAP pressue.
Cycle = How sensitive is the machine to the start of your exhale, and thus how quickly does it start switching to your EPAP pressure.

As Pugsy said your VPAP Auto (in any mode) does not cause or force you to breathe if/when you stop breathing. Triggering and cycling are simply sensitivity/timing options for switching from the IPAP pressure to the EPAP pressure (and vice versa) that depend on the patient's own breathing.

Re: Resmed S9 VPAP Auto setting questions
Thanks! Thats helpful in understanding those two items.
Re: Resmed S9 VPAP Auto setting questions
the S and Vauto modes do not breath for you, for that you need a machine that has ST mode, where you can set a backup rate if you don't initiate a breath, or one that has ASV or autoASV mode to adaptively initiate and support breaths when you don't try to breath on your own. your vpap auto has none of these modes.DAG wrote:So what I'm wanting to effect is for the machine to cause me to breathe when I go too long NOT breathing. Thanks for your post. Well, I may need to ask for another sleep-study and see what gives.
