When a full face mask?

Post by cpaper » Thu Feb 17, 2005 6:49 am

When would a full face mask be prescribed rather than a nasal mask?
Does it suit a certain situation?

It's mostly a matter of preference.

If you have a deviated septum or bad allergies or some other condition which makes breathing through your nose unreliable at best, then a full face or mouth mask is probably indicated.

Other than that, it's really just a matter of what you're comfortable with, and what fits. (Some people CAN breathe through their nose, but find that it feels unnecessarily restrictive to be ONLY able to breathe through their noses, etc).

Liam, who knows better than to discuss preference on here, after the "Helen Hunt" fiasco.

Count me in on Full Face user... I do have a deviated septum and a mouth breather... But I can say that after almost a week, getting used to the full face mask took a bit of fiddling (mostly John Denver tunes if you must know) but I did get to the point that it is comfortable... I would suggest going with a full face that has a fairly wide acceptance, i.e. Mirage Ultra...

So does everybody keep a full-face mask on standby for when you have a bad cold and can't breathe thru your nose? Seems as if you'd feel even worse with a cold if you had to miss a night on cpap....

MIKESUS, Do you have a mouth breather? I have very bad allergies and find that in order to breathe with my cpap, I have to saturate my sinuses with nasal spray decongestants before bedtime. I have a comfort classic nasal mask that I've gotten somewhat used to after two weeks of being on the cpap, but would rather not rely on nasal sprays. Do you know anything about the Oracle Oral mouth mask. I'm afraid I'm going to empty my bank account trying out different masks. I used to spending my money on frivalous things.

LYNN, I'm glad you asked that question. Thank you.

And thank you to anyone who can provide some input on oral masks.

Guys!! Don't soak your sinuses -- Irrigate them

Post by meister » Thu Feb 17, 2005 3:00 pm

Never ever use Afrin! It will come back and bite you big time with
rebound, and your turbinates will keep getting larger and larger
until you need surrger. Try Echinacea or Butterbur. Cheap and can
be found at any Health food store. Their is a Swiss study which
shows Butterbur to be just as good as a big name Prescription drug.
Then get yourself a good nasal irrigator or Seti Pot, and irrigate those
sinuses. You got to keep them open if you want to have any chance
at all to not mouth breathe. Most likely you have allergies. Mine
are Dust Mites and Dogs. When I keep the Dog out of the room,
things are much, much better. So Irrigate and Echinacea are easy
things to try. Grossand Nasal irrigator

Lynn - you have asked the question that should be answered..... What do we do when we get colds and our noses are all clogged up? How do we handle that sort of situation?
Laughter never killed anyone..... Go ahead, laugh! It's good for you!! ;-)

I do! A ResMed Ultra Mirage FF mask stashed away for exactly what you mentioned - allows me to continue getting treatment through easy mouth breathing when nose is too stopped up.

I do as well, same one. I try to use the Swift whenever I can possibly get air through my nostrils, and the Ultra Mirage when that just ain't happening.

Liam, who wonders if the Swift is what was meant on Welcome Back Kotter, when they said "Up Your Nose with a Rubber Hose".

Keep in mind that anyone allergic to ragweed (classic "hayfever") will likely be sensitive/allergic to echinacea--making it a no-no for allergy sufferers. For those who aren't ragweed sensitive, echinacea is GREAT.

Sniffing along year round...

How about Sudafed Nightime Sinus tablets? I just bought some today. I have been using saline and occasionally 4-Way nasal spray. It seems that when I sleep on my side, the lower nostril becomes completely clogged. I seem to do better without the humidifier.

Thanks to you guys, I think I'll just go ahead and order one of those ResMed Ultra Mirage FF masks for the stuffy nose nights. I have an Activa nasal mask which is working really well, but I am still trying to decide whether to order (in addition) the Breeze or the Swift Nasal Pillows for a change ..... You all gave your opinions, and I guess it's almost down to flipping a coin...

I think all my shopping this week will be at cpap.com. It would be more FUN shopping at Nordstrom, but hey, my kingdom (queendom?) for a good night's sleep, right.

Guess I am lucky, doc already had me on Flonase and stuffy isn't a problem...

As to using afrin, you might as well switch to battery acid. The father of a good friend of mine used to use it all the time... Ended up having reconstructive surgery...
