SleepyHead Apneas Below 10 Seconds?

Post by SleepyToo2 » Wed Apr 23, 2014 8:13 pm

Last night my AHI was 0.62 according to SleepyHead. Hypopneas 0.31, OAs 0.31, clear airways 0.00. RERAs 0.46. Pretty darn good, I thought. Sleep time was only 6:28 (not long enough for me, but morning came to early!). My hypopneas (all 2 of them) were 14 and 20 seconds. The 2 OAs were 8 seconds each. The RERAs were 35, 26, and 7 seconds. What is the story with those events less than 10 seconds? Is there a way to exclude them from being counted for the AHI? I thought that there is a 10 second minimum. Oh, the average leak was 5.73, which is actually pretty good for me. I am just a bit confused about what is really going on. Tired right now, but it is bed-time. Felt pretty good most of the day. Raising my pressure to 12, even though I have lost weight, seems to have been the right thing to do.

That number in parentheses on the SleepyHead report isn't the actual duration of events like it is with the ResMed machines.
With the Respironics machines (which don't give us event duration) that's really a marker of sorts...Not actual seconds but it is real close to the duration. If it shows 8...then probably the event lasted barely 10 seconds. When Mark first came out with SleepyHead he told us about the "markers" for the Respironics data but we looked at hundreds events and manually counted the seconds and it was so close that we left it.
SleepyHead can only report what the machine flags...so if it got a flag then it met the definition criteria which of course includes 10 seconds.
I found that I had a lot of 8 and 9s...and when I manually counted the seconds...always around 10 or 11 seconds.
When I would see a 30 in parentheses...and counted the seconds it was real close to 30 seconds..like maybe 28 or there abouts.
It's difficult to get a manual second count because when we zoom in close enough to count seconds then it's difficult to see the beginning and the end of the reduction in flow.

So ...those with7 or 8 or 9 in parentheses...weren't actually seconds but most likely barely hit 10 seconds.
