cpap machine

Post by facetime » Sat Apr 19, 2014 2:10 pm

My friend's son stopped dringing alcohol and also lost weight. He no longer needs his CPAP machine. My sleep Dr. told me that if I lost weight and stopped drinking my glass of wine with my main meal, I would not need my CPAP machine. It's not that I did not believe him, it's just so hard to loose weight, even if is only 10 lbs. Maybe I'll just start with cutting out the glass of wine and see where that takes me!

I'll just start with cutting out the glass of wine
That's the worst damn advice I have ever read in this forum.

It wasn't meant as advice! But if that poster would like some, we can dish it out, whether for diet or cpap help.

You have a fifty fifty chance of getting off of cpap and one glass of wine is not going to make a difference. A firm commitment to cutting out sugar and carbs and doing some walking will go a much longer way.

I've lost 48lbs since starting my CPAP and still cannot lower the pressure below 12. I've had ONE BOTTLE of wine per day since I was 20 years old. I started
exercising a couple months into CPAP. I no longer really craved carbs for some reason, so my eating got better. I didn't need to sleep in the day time. Over the
months my wine consumption went down to a bottle or two a week. There is NO WAY a glass of wine or 3 a day is going to be detrimental to you, although
with less wine I don't have that effect where I sleep well for 3 hours and wake up. Then it takes me a while to get back to sleep. With less booze, I sleep
straight through. I started at 48AHI and now wine or no wine I'm under 1.0 99.9% of the time. I even get buckshot twice or three times a month now. When
I have the wine wake-up, I have a flurry of 10 second centrals right before I wake up. One glass of wine helps not hurts

Losing weight and cutting back on alcohol can be very positive for your health, but whether they will eliminate the need for CPAP is not certain. It helps SOME people.

The only way to know, once you've cut out the wine and lost some real weight, is to have a sleep study. If it turns out that you no longer need CPAP, then congratulations. Be aware that gaining weight back or starting to drink again can reverse all the progress you make.

And by the way, alcohol is pure carbohydrate.
