Finally getting my machine tomorrow, couple questions
Finally getting my machine tomorrow, couple questions
66 days after my sleep study, I'm finally getting my machine tomorrow!!! I am supposed to be getting the ResMed S9 AutoSet. I have a couple questions though.
1. What accessories do you consider to be "necessary" and what accessories are just "optional"?
2. Do any of you use anything under the CPAP machine to protect your nightstand from possible water damage? If so, what do you use?
Any advice you can give me is greatly appreciated.

Hi Sharry,
The only for sure "must" is of course the mask. Assuming the machine will come with a hose. But the Climateline hose is a personal "must" for me -- I like the warm humidified air and no rainout in my mask.
I don't have anything under my machine. I fill the water tank in my kitchen so I don't worry about water spilling onto the nightstand. If I did have that concern I'd probably get a waterproof placement to put under the machine.
Good luck!

Re: Finally getting my machine tomorrow, couple questions
Congratulations! Definitely make sure you have the mask the is right for you. Also, if you are supposed to get a S9, don't leave with anything else! You need the hose, filters that go with the machine. Make sure you know your replacement schedule - how often you get to order new filters, hoses, masks, mask parts etc. Also, if the mask they give you doesn't work out, let them know right away - I don't know what insurance you have, but mine had one exchange of the mask within 30 days - I did that 2 days later and didn't leave the DME until we had a mask that would work. I don't have anything under my machine, there isn't any water that leaks out of the machine onto my nightstand and the water tank comes out of mine to fill it - I don't know about the S9. Good luck and let us know how it goes!Sharrykb wrote:66 days after my sleep study, I'm finally getting my machine tomorrow!!! I am supposed to be getting the ResMed S9 AutoSet. Do you have an old mouse pad? It can also help keep the machine from skittering around and being noisy.

Double check that the machine says AUTOSET instead of ESCAPE AUTO on it. The word AutoSet should appear on the machine right by the big On/Off button. The S9 Escape AUTO does NOT record leak data and it runs an older Auto algorithm than the S9 AutoSet. The efficacy data recorded by the S9 Escape AUTO is very, very limited compared to the full data recorded by the S9 AutoSet.Sharrykb wrote:66 days after my sleep study, I'm finally getting my machine tomorrow!!! Some DMEs pull the game that "an S9 Auto" means "an S9 Escape AUTO" instead of the more expensive S9 AutoSet.
And as frustrating as it might be, if the DME tries to pull this switcheroo of substituting an Escape AUTO for an AUTOset, you're better off refusing delivery of the machine and insisting that they order the machine you want than accepting the Escape AUTO with the hope that you'll be able to switch it out later ...

Re: Finally getting my machine tomorrow, couple questions
Thanks to this forum, I was aware of that potential issue. Thank you for the reminder though! I will be sure I don't end up with the Escape version. I'm completely frustrated by the length of time this whole process has taken but I'm willing to wait and even start over with a new DME if they try to give me an Escape.robysue wrote:Double check that the machine says AUTOSET instead of ESCAPE AUTO on it. Finally getting my machine tomorrow, couple questions
Welcome to the sub-culture of oxygenated sleepers! I've been on an Auto-PAP machine 7 months. Remember: only YOU can push the so-called healthcare "system" to improving your health.
Here is the sum-total if my journey, so far:
1. Do not accept masks & machine settings that bug you, wake you up suffocating, leaking, etc. Miss-matched patient and machine/supplies DO NOT get better with time.
2. No two faces work best with a certain mask! Keep trying different masks once machine settings like min & max pressure, exhalation pressure & "ramp" settings are dialed in. It took five (5) different masks to find the one that doesn't leak, wear a hole on the bridge if my nose, squeeze my skull with strap tightness to stop leaks, and allows occasional mouth breathing.
3. Set your mind to "win!" Everyone except you has an ulterior motive (e.g. Get you out of the office in 12 minutes, give you the cheapest CPAP & bill your payor for the most expensive, talk you into the mask that they over-ordered to clear their shelves, convince you you are a whiner, etc., etc.
PERSEVERE! Take your new normal a week at a time and before you know it you will realize how much better you feel.
There are a few hundred other lessons learned (like wearing foam ear plugs, sleeping alone and getting on first-name basis with DME customer service rep) but that you will see following this group. Wish you the best.

Thank you everyone for the wonderful advice! They brought in my machine and it was the ResMed S9 AutoSet just like I asked for!!! She was quite impressed at how much I already knew - thanks to this forum.
Now I'm off to update my equipment info on the forum. And I will use text, not the pictures.

I don't put my machine on my nightstand. It sits on a small plastic kids stool by my bedside up off the floor. I never hear any noise and I never get rainout. You can save space on your night stand by putting it on a small stand lower than your mattress, next to your bed.

Re: Finally getting my machine tomorrow, couple questions
I have always used a small nightstand to put my machines on ...actually bought a little antique table just for that purpose 5 years ago. Machine sits about 3 inches lower than mattress on that little table and I have never had water spill on the table.
I remove the tank to fill though...I don't trust my shaky hands over the machine with water.
My distilled water is kept on a second shelf on that little table which is not far from the floor. I just remove the tank and fill it over the bed from the distilled water container and then put the tank back in the humidifier.
Never had any noise issues so never really needed or wanted the machine lower. You can let your personal preference be your guide. Mouse pads help absorb vibration and a bit of noise and also act as a bit of a slide prevention mechanism. Though I have never (knock on wood) had any issues with the machine wanting to slide around anyway. My little table has a tiny outside ridge that sort of would block a slide off that might try to happen. It's only maybe 1/2 inch high. That's one of the reasons I bought that little table...that and I just like antique stuff and the size was right for where I had to put a table since bedroom is tiny and the bed is a king size bed.

Re: Finally getting my machine tomorrow, couple questions
My nightstand is old but one thing I do have my machine set on is a computer mouse pad; it helps to keep my machine in place otherwise when I use furniture polish on the nightstand and did not use a mousepad my machine would be all over the place. The mousepad works great and most of the standard ones aren't that expensive. I don't know much about the ResMed S9 Autoset but I would make sure that you're getting a ResMed S9 "Elite" machine and not an "Escape". Members on this discussion board told me weeks ago that I should insist that my DME get me a ResMed S9 Elite; not the Escape because the Elite records more data and is a better built machine. I would also get the heated humidifier with the machine and the heated hose. Some insurance companies might not pay for the heated hose but you can buy one from CPAP.com for $40.00 USD + ground shipping.Sharrykb wrote:66 days after my sleep study, I'm finally getting my machine tomorrow!!!
