Mask Question

Post by LarryJ » Tue Feb 15, 2005 10:35 am

Is there a mask that just covers your mouth? Since people use a nose mask and a chin strap to keep your mouth closed wouldnt you think that it would be possible to have a mouth mask and use a nose clip kind of like swimmers wear. This would then solve the problem with nose sores from the ff mask i use.

The only one of which I am aware is the Fisher & Paykel Oracle.

I have not tried it, I'm tempted to, but as with every change I make, it gets more expensive.

Liam, who is made of money, but once it's been in his body, no one will accept it as payment.

Larry, as Liam mentioned, there's the Oracle. But it goes in your mouth partly. The inner flap goes between the teeth/gums and lips and there's an aggravating little nub that sits just inside an inch or so.

But it sounded like what you are looking for is a mask that covers only the outside of the mouth - the way a nasal mask covers the outside of the nose. I don't know of any mask like that.

I've been able to use my Activa nasal mask as a "covers the mouth only" mask, though. Success with that would depend entirely on shape of face, how short the distance is from below the lower lip to above the upper lip, width of mouth, etc. I can place my shallow size Activa over my open mouth perfectly. When worn that way, the forehead pad is at the level of my eyebrows.

The top of the shallow's cushion is a tiny bit wider and blunter than the "standard" size. Fits exactly right to block off the openings to my nostrils (the nares) so I don't even have to wear nose plugs or a nose clip to prevent nasal air snort leaks. The "shallow" cushion is also considerably wider at the bottom than the standard, so provides more width and roominess for covering the mouth. Very comfortable way to mouth breathe at night when I just don't feel like using a full face mask.

Everyone's mileage would vary considerably as to whether they could use an Activa or any nasal mask as a "mouth mask" instead. The Activa is sooooo leak proof - it works comfortably either way for me.

Thank you for the info! I might just try the Activa (wish the ff one was out).
