Eczema and my Ultra Mirage mask

Post by jennb » Sat Feb 12, 2005 7:02 pm

I have been successfully using my Ultra Mirage mask for 2 years and replaced parts are recommended. Beginning September 2004 I have had reoccuring eczema problems around my mouth and nose (where my mask rests). I occasionally have eczema problems on other parts of my body (knees, hands and scalp) am quite upset about the recent problem because it is unsightly. My doctor recommended using hydrocortisone on the areas before bed but it hasn't helped. The only way it clears up is if I don't use my cpap for 3-5 nights in a row...which is not a good solution for me!

Has anyone else had this problem? I don't think I have an allergy to the silicone, but am not certain. I am going to try the soaking that is suggested in the FAQ section of the CPAP.com website, but if this doesn't work I don't know what else to do.

If it were me I would talk to a dermatologist about the issue since it's skin-specific. There are topical creams on the market formulated specifically for eczema and maybe something like that would help. (I'm assuming when you say you talked to your doctor that you meant your regular physician) So I would talk about it with a specialist like a dermatologist.

Jennb,

My wife has eczema flare-ups on her hands. I know it can be difficult to get rid of. I would suggest trying a nasal pillow interface such as the Resmed mirage Swift or the Puritan Bennett Breeze while you let your eczema heal. The Breeze may be the best option in your case as it has next to nothing that touches your skin.

Stay away from the antibacterial soaps.
Sincerely,

Are you using the same mask for 2 years? Maybe I read that wrong...
