Scheduled Sleep Study - Part II

Post by Starlette » Sun May 19, 2013 12:17 am

Good evening everyone.

At the beginning of May, I created a thread called Scheduled Sleep Study: Therapy is Currently Not Working. In this thread, I stated that I was not getting the therapy as I was used to in the past. Therefore, a sleep study had been ordered from my PA–C.

Before I begin, I'd like to let you know that my 25th Wedding Anniversary Celebration (May 11th, Actual Wedding date was May 7th,1988) was awesome! I was alert and psychologically ready to prepare and enjoy this special event with my husband, family and friends.

On Thursday, May 9th, I was scheduled to see my neurologist for an update on my seizures. He was the one that I had seen about brain, seizures, and Transient Global Amnesia back in May 2012 Transient Global Amnesia: Related to OSA???. I'll be honest with you, I really did not want to see a neurologist from the very beginning (this time a year ago). I had been dragging my rear end through each appointment. To tell you the truth, I had been dodging him for every appointment. You may think this is silly behavior, but I did not want any assistance from him, any drugs or any type of therapy. I suppose my thought about the whole process was I did not belong there, I didn't need him for anything, nor did I want any of his prescriptions that would be available. Them one late afternoon, my husband and I had a visit with my sister-in-law, who is a family physician. I decided to talk to her about this ordeal and decided to be honest with her. In a nutshell, she stated to me that it sounded like he was trying to take care of me and that I should listen to him. On that note, the next appointment that I had with him was on Thursday, May 9th. During my meeting with him, I decided to be truly honest and explained about how I felt about him working with me. He didn't seem to flinch, but his body language proved to me that he was present and listening to me. I explained to him what I had stated to you earlier in this thread that I really did not feel that I belong there. Lastly, I commented to him after seeing my sister-in-law, I felt that me being there was to my benefit; He was there to help me reduce the headaches/migraines/seizures; and that I was willing to do anything that he suggested to me to make me feel better. I explained to him that I was being scheduled for an upcoming sleep study by my PA-C. He stated that he was going to handle the whole sleep study situation and cancel the upcoming sleep study being ordered by my PA-C. He will be Ordering/Advising as stated: "Sleep study SPLIT (with seizure montage. Trial alternative CPAP/BiPAP masks - patient reports difficulties with current mask).*

Partners Sinus Problem
NOTE: I am soooo thankful that I passed by this thread this evening and read it. What was stated in this thread was the reason why the suggestion was made to try different masks. I have been dealing with the SAME situation, stuffy sinuses due to CPAP therapy. Honestly, I don't know if I should make mention of what was stated in this thread. Please advise me on this. The problem with "my masks" was because of my stuffy nose. I think I may have found the solution to my stuffy nose in this thread. After reading this thread, I went to the store to buy the saline spray that Pugsy had suggested****. For me, the stuffy nose was followed by headaches in the morning. Reducing headaches is the reason the neurologist had prescribed me Lamictal XR (100 mg). NOTE: By reason of this latest appointment on Thursday, May 9th, I am currently being titrated from 100 mg to 200 mg via a starter kit.

In a long, roundabout way, I am suggesting that:
* I am very proud of myself to tell my neurologist the truth and my discerns about seeing him.
** Because of my honesty, the sleep study will now be tailored for a more accurate analysis regarding: sleep apnea, seizures, and breathing issues with the CPAP mask (NOTE: If they do suggest a different type of mask, I am going to recommend for myself the Wisp Nasal Mask from Respironics due to this thread WISP Nasal Mask from Respironics.. I would like to try it.
*** I will also add the Saline Nasal Spray to my nightly regiment. Man, what a person has to do to get a great night's sleep!
**** When I had seen my PA-C about my stuffy nose and CPAP, she recommended KY Jelly (water based) rather than saline spray

Starlette, it's good to hear that you are under the care of a doctor who you can be honest with and who seems to want to really help you get to the root of your problems. Sometimes we have the misfortune of having a doctor who isn't helpful and it can sour us on the medical profession in general, but there are times when we really do need the expertise of a specialist, and your symptoms sound like one of those times. Please do keep us informed how this progresses.

I did try the KY Jelly last night. It did help somewhat, but not as much as I was hoping for.
