I've come down with a nasty case of the spring flu. Went in to the PCP's office to wrangle out a prescription for dealing with a very severe cough today. This is clearly the sickest I've been since starting CPAP back in Sept. 2010.
And this flu has done a real number on both my insomnia and my AHI. Consider Sunday night's SH graphs:

And Monday's was even worse:

This is the first time since starting PAP in Sep. 2010 that I've had an AHI close to 10. And those great big gaps in the wave flow? That's where I was sitting in bed wide awake wondering if I should get up, but feeling too rotten to get up and feeling too rotten to get to sleep. So I read for a while in bed. (About the only time I ever allow myself to read in bed is when I'm sick with the flu and can't get to sleep anyway.)
On both nights, I was able to get to sleep ok at the beginning of the night by waiting until I couldn't keep my eyes open. But about an hour into the night, I woke up coughing extremely hard with a lot of aerophagia. And a sense of not being able to breath---regardless of whether I had my nasal pillows on or not. As is obvious from the gaps in the wave flow, it took a very, very long time for me to get settled down enough and sleepy enough to try to go back to sleep. And last night I believe hubby brought me a sudafed sometime near the beginning of the really long wake that starts around 4:40AM
Tonight I'm taking hubby's suggestion and dragging Kaa down to the living room and sleeping in the recliner. Hopefully that will minimize the horrible coughing, along with the generic tessalon pearls (cough medicine) and some Nyquil, also suggested by the PA who saw me. And that, in turn, should finally let me get some sleep so I can get over this dang flu bug.
So for now, out goes all the discipline on sleep hygiene: Until this thing runs its course, I intend to fall asleep when I can't keep my eyes open; read in bed when I'm awake and waiting to get sleepy; and not use the alarm clock to get up.
