Well here's a fun tidbit.

In their showcase study (funded by them-- What a BF surprise), the patient selection showed an AHI of 43.1 at baseline, with the Hypopnea Index 38.3 and the Apnea Index only 4.8.

I guess HGNS can only "S" so much.

Interestingly, the Respiratory Arousal Index was 31.3 on an AHI of 43.1.

Now that's weird. As appropriately described in the Inspire cartoon, an arousal in needed to open up the airway during a respiratory event. And like a quarter of them don't.

What, the editorial too?

Cheapskates. At least they could let that pass.

Maybe Inspire will put a link to it soon.

Corky..Thanks for taking the plunge..I have been following the research for years. Been on the CPAP for 6 years. I have documented on this site several time that we are living in the "horse and buggy days" with the current setup. You may just have opened up the way.. DO keep us informed.

Totally agree Deb.

I don't understand the hostility.

Not everyone has perfect communication skills and says the right thing all the time. The folks who have been critical of Corky aren't perfect. No one is, including me.

Corky is not doing a religious pilgrimage. This is not a faith based initiative.

He is part of a scientific study - or so he says. Science is not about faith, it is about challenging. Corky has just provided little tiny nuggets here and there. People want to read the real stuff, not little teases like "I am going to the doctor" "I am back from the doctor"

I am perplexed as to why Corky needs to be challenged as he has never made any claims that his surgery was going to trump cpap. He simply wanted to mention his experiences.

Hmm, he mentioned that he felt sleep apnea contributed to his father's death. If that isn't providing detail, I don't know what is.

I agree, 49er! I'm sure Corky doesn't need us to be speaking for him, but it's hard to sit back and see him attacked when all he is doing is telling us of this new and, potentially, life-changing surgery. I would have thought most people on this forum would be keenly interested and supportive but obviously not everyone. However, some of us are, so please keep us posted, Corky.

I go to Sydney in two weeks for a thorough medical and a sleep study to see if I fit the criteria to continue. I think I'll be hesitating to post anything further for fear of attacks and criticism.

How about:

  • EDS is caused by insufficient or fragmented sleep
  • A valid measure of measuring Sleep Fragmentation is the Arousal Index (AI)(number of arousals per hour)
  • AI < 5.0 is considered "Normal"
  • Implantation of HGNS reduces only to the extent of

    Image

  • You can achieve the same results much easier, cheaper and safer by taking mirtazapine
  • You can get better results by getting a TBS/UPPP

Is there an "intervention group" and a "control group"?

If we look at the results of TBS/UPPP:

vs. HGNS:

the clinical advantage is clearly seen (AHI = 5 noted).

And how do we know that the HGNS thing really isn't just a GPS, and this is a government plot to designed to track our whereabouts and control us?

Pretty obvious when you think about it!

Who's laughing now?

As noted in another thread, it is the arousals that cause EDS. Arousal Index (AI), can be equated to to AHI values when quantifying severity, and again target is <5.0.

Using the aforementioned study, we see that

and although the results sound impressive, put into context, this modality certainly has a ways to go.

I mean, look at the posters who come in here with residual AHI of 24.7 and they are like

"OMIGOD MY AHI IS 24.7 ON SYSPAPS9 WHATEVER AND I'M GONNA DIE NOW NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.............!!!"
