A screen shot would help.

a couple of other strange occurrences
then finally it seemed to run and wanted data to be imported
You don't yet have any data to import. Most people who install SleepyHead already have an SD card with one or more night's of data on it. Until you import the data, you can't look at it.
i use xp pro sp3
should i abandon this and get a newer pc
or is this sort of errors and odd messages normal
everything seems to run slow
dont know if it phones home or is written in some script language that is slow or what
Sounds like you are running a pretty old machine if you're still using XP.
SleepyHead does not "phone home". It is written in a standard scripting language, but I've forgotten which. (If you want, you can download the source code and examine it. JediMark doesn't hide the source.)
also this thing asked for WAY TOO MUCH PERSONAL DATA that is totally unnecessary to run a report from
All of that information can be skipped and SleepyHead will still run. But basically the program asks for the same information that ResScan and Encore Pro use in patient profiles to make a printout that is usable for the doctor and DME: Name and address of patient, name of doctor. And information about the diagnosis and the prescription.
The stuff about height, weight, and additional information about the machine settings are also optional, but they're useful for using some of the SleepyHead bells and whistles. You can use SH to track daily weight if weight is one of your issues, and if you give SH your height as well as weight, SH will be happy to track daily body mass index. If you don't give SH your height or weight, then you don't get that data.
if NSA is not stealing private info this way why does it care what my name and phone nr are and my doctors name yada yada
JediMark is an Australian programmer who wrote SleepyHead in order to make it easier to track his own data. He is a forum member, but does not post much. He's been having health problems and so he's not done much coding recently. But I assure you that he's not feeding any of your data to the NSA.
And again, JediMark provided places to enter all that information
in case someone wants to use SleepyHead to generate an official looking report to hand to a doctor, a DME, or in some cases a Division of Motor Vehicles office since in some parts of the world your driver's license can be restricted if you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and you cannot prove that you are compliant with therapy.
But SleepyHead works fine if you leave
all of that personal information totally blank.
