help?

Post by ActorApnea » Fri Dec 30, 2005 3:36 pm

Howdy all...

I'm an actor diagnosed and treating my OSA for 10 years now. In May '05, my CPAP quit working.

I now have no insurance and am looking for cheap cheap cheap ways to replace my CPAP...any thoughts?

Thanks!

If money is the primary concern regarding the replacement, there is a great deal at CPAP.com (check out the sticky note on this forum index re: free Breeze) for Puritan Bennett CPAP w/ free Breeze nasal pillows for @297.00. I ordered a different machine/mask from CPAP.com and am VERY happy with the service I received.

One additional item to add to newgals info is that the deal of the machine w/the free mask ends on December 31. If you check out http://www.sleepapnea.org/, I saw a thread just today where a guest was wondering how to sell his CPAP.

Good Luck

If you are really broke you might try Yahoo Auctions. The machinery sold there are often older models and you don't get the service obviously that you would if you were able to buy from this site...

Colorado Jen, I do PM's when mentioning a different site because this forum is ran by CPAP.com and I feel out of fairness it is best to mention a different site in private.

I wanted to do this on PM but you got guested.

Try Awake in America. They have different plans to halp people.

I understand what you are saying about courtesy to the hosts of this message board, Severeena.

The only problem with using nothing but PMs to give much needed info about other sites to a poster who is "broke", is that others besides the original poster are reading without ever posting. Some of the non-posting "readers" are also in dire financial situations and desperately need info about the cheapest place to get a machine.

Colorado Jan put in a nice plug for cpap.com when she mentioned getting service that a yahoo auctions buyer might not get.

I think Johnny is big enough not to begrudge a cpap'er in need the info necessary to get a machine that could save a life - wherever it's found.

ActorApnea, deedster had a good suggestion too - AWAKE in America.

Something else you might try... start asking everyone you know if they know someone who uses a cpap machine. Contact the users. They just might have given up and have a machine packed away in a closet, never to be used again. Or, they might have been given a new one and have the old one, still perfectly good, just gathering dust. That's how I found the first cpap machine I ever tried out.

Also, contact any sleep clinics and home health care places in your area. Explain your plight and ask if they have an extra machine you could use.

Thanks, Rested Gal, for defending my honor, lol. I thoroughly understand the concept of showing Johnny Goodman and CPAP.com the respect they deserve for running this great site for us. But someone else had already mentioned another board. And the poster said he was an actor and needed cheap, cheap, cheap. My sister-in-law is an actress in Chicago, quite successful in terms of frequent work and name recognition by the public. But she makes diddly-squat money-wise. So I was taking it seriously that cheap, cheap, cheap may mean just that. And hey! I thought I was being very tactful by pointing out that the equipment will likely be out of date and there will be no service or help involved.

Should have seen me the other day...I wrote about three posts in one day telling people to quit worrying about insurance and just buy straight from CPAP.com. This is definitely a great place for both researching and purchasing CPAP stuff and I would never say otherwise.

But thanks for keeping me on my toes! Sometimes I need that!

I certainly hope you are able to get the help you need. It bites when financial means keep you from getting what you need. Some states have special programs other than medicaid to help people with medical things. Here in Colorado we have something called CICP. If you want PM me the state where you are from, and I could always do a search for you really quick and see if I find something. There is another website too called http://modestneeds.org/
There is an application there you can fill out too for help. The awake site looked like something to try first because they might be able to get you another sleep study. If it has been so long you will have to get another one done perhaps. Good luck and God bless

Happy New Year

My local DME takes in old machines when his patients/customers get new ones. He cleans them up, tests them and then gives them to patients who cannot afford one. Perhaps there are some nice DMEs in your area that might offer something like that.

My local DME only does CPAP, so they are able to be very focused. If you can find a DME that specializes in CPAP, that might help.

Finally, perhaps there are some folks on the forums that have a new machine and might be willing to part with their old one to help someone like you out.

Keep us posted, and I really hope that you can find a machine that meets your needs and doesn't cost you more than you can afford.

I wish I could get the cpap my dad has never used

Post by sapphireskye » Sat Dec 31, 2005 3:26 am

It is an old machine, and I dunno if it is any good anymore. But my father who has severe sleep apnea and bought a machine years back will not use it.
He never even used it once at the house. I wish he would, cuz I worry about him. What a waste of money.

I really hope you can get something
