Sleep Apnea Diagnosis

Post by Leprechaun » Tue Dec 28, 2004 5:26 pm

New User,
Male, 37yrs old, married.
6ft 185 pounds.

I have been diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea. I was suspected of having this disorder from my doctor who states pre mature greying of your hair is quite common in apnea patients? who knows?
Anyways ,
I have been to the sleep clinic and cannot bring myself to purchase this device. I have 2 young children ages 4 and 2months.
Busy, professional, career.
Enjoy a drink or two ,which I know makes things worse.

What I don't understand is where did this disorder come from?
Why all of the sudden do I have this?
I know I need this, but feel ridiculous even discussing this machine.

Could a slight weight gain have caused this? (15-20pounds)
Is their anything else that can be done. I am considering the surgery instead of this machine.
Looking forward to your replies.

Hello,
I'm bald so must have severe apnea...LOL... Yes 20 lbs could make the difference.. Who knows.. Loose it and see if it changes.. For now I see 2 good reasons to get a cpap. They are 4yrs and 2 months.

If you are a busy professional cpap may give you more energy.

Many loose 10 lbs after starting therapy.

A drink wont hurt much. Just don't have it before bed. Give it a few hrs .

Is your apnea obstructive only or mixed with centrals ?

Purchase a auto titrating cpap if you can.

Have a ENT Dr.check you for other obstructions, tumors also. Don't just believe the sleep Dr. and study.

read the posts and ask lots of questions . There are many experienced patients here.

Cheers,

Chris

I've never heard of pre-mature graying of hair being related to sleep apnea. Can anyone find information to back this up or to refute it?

There are plenty of Quacks out there . Yesterday we had a poster say her Dr. never heard of anyone dieing of sleep apnea. Perhaps he was joking about the gray hair .

Hi Leprechaun,

It's really not that bad. You just use the machine when you sleep. During the day you are the young (more) energetic professional you've always been. Browse around the forum, you'll see guys just like yourself. You haven't been banished to cpap geekdom, it does not require you where a pocket protector and pants that are too short.

In all seriousness, you may want to consider surgery but get the machine first. You'll be getting treatment, feeling better and will have plenty of time to look into surgery.
Sincerely,
wading thru the muck of the sleep study/DME/Insurance money pit!

I am 37, married with 4 kids, and just recently diagonosed. Actually have only slept with the CPAP two nights. I have to take the machine seriously because I have so many symptoms during the day from fatigue to confusion and joint pain to muscle aches. Are your days normal?
