Will insurance cover heated hose?

Post by Born Tired » Fri Oct 14, 2005 7:28 pm

I know many of you have and like the heated hose. Anybody's insurance cover the hose, or is it just considered a luxury?
One thing I don't need is a shower in the middle of the night.
Thanks,
Esther

I don't know of a single case where insurance paid for a heated hose.

On the other hand, I can't think of a single case where a person paid for one out-of-pocket and regretted it.

Of course this assumes that rainout is a problem for you.

Tis the season!

Yes, Snork, as the weather has gotten a bit cooler it has started again and will only get worse with colder weather. We have an oil furnace with "forced hot air" to heat the house (an 1890 model), and I have to really crank up the old humidifier to prevent nose bleeds. But that leads to multiple episodes of gurgling in the hose which I have to drain and taking tissue or a cloth to dry out the inside of my mask. My goal is to someday be able to sleep straight through the night and wake up feeling refreshed.

My employer lets me contribute part of my paycheck to a "Flexben" (flexible benefits) account that can then be tapped to pay for medical costs not covered by insurance. Most qualify as long as it's prescribed by a doctor. So when I'm figuring out my Flexben for next year, I'm going to include money for a heated hose and an Aura mask (not availble from my DME). I might also try submitting these on my own to the health insurance - couldn't hurt. In any event, the Flexben helps to spread out those out-of-pocket medical costs. The only drawback is, you have to take a best guess at how much you're going to need for the year, and if there's anything left you lose it. I figure I can always get a new pair of glasses or CPAP stuff if there's money left.

Thanks for the info, Carol. That wouldn't apply to me, but I really appreciate your input. It might help someone else in similar circumstances. That's a great thing about this forum--you can learn so much from the variety of info and advice that people are willing to contribute.
Have a great day.

There is a way to get a 'heated hose' under your insurance but there is a 'gotcha'

You have to order either one of these two machines
(one cpap the other apap)

http://www.fphcare.com/osa/cpaps.asp

The HC604 & HC608 both come with an integrated heated tube as well as Fisher & Paykel's Ambient Tracking humidifier facility.

I am not clear on the status of FDA approval in the US on these machines as they are still fairly new.

F&P gear is excellent & these machines are top of the line. Some people don't like the type of humidifier bottle that comes with these machines as they can't be dissasembled but having just done a one month trial of a F&P machine I can say it caused me no concerns at all as I found easy ways to keep the water chambers clean (i.e. distilled water for example).

F&P have a winner of a product with their xPAP & built-in heated hose. It is now a matter of time as to when all machines come with an integrated one.

Cheers

DSM

xPAP and Quattro std mask (plus a pad-a-cheek anti-leak strap)

Thanks dsm,
I will be getting an auto soon but will probably get the Remstar Auto with Cflex--I already have the heated humidifier for it and seems like it gets good reviews overall by users.
Sleep well,
