sleeping on my side with a Bipap ??

Post by tps » Sat Jan 08, 2005 12:25 pm

I am a 58 year old man and have slept on my stomach all my life with some side sleeping the past couple of years. After two weeks on a Bipap, I am pleased that my blood pressure is down significantly and I am getting used to the machine and life change. I would like to sleep some on my side, but don't want to interfer with the breathing if the mask gets moved etc... Do I just stay on my back or can I adapt to my side. If so, how please? Thank you.

Hi Tom,

That's great to hear you're doing so well now!

What mask are you using? If you like your mask and if it still feels comfortable on you when you turn onto your stomach, I wouldn't worry about it. I suppose that even on your stomach, you keep your head turned somewhat to the side? I'd think it would be ok to sleep any which way you like. If the mask gets dislodged often and gets leaky in some sleep positions, you might want to try a different mask. Or perhaps just a different pillow arrangement would help.

I'm able to sleep on my side fine (and can turn to other side) with many different kinds of masks. I use a thin tempurpedic pillow with a regular pillow (thin foam pillow) on top of the tempurpedic. Two pillows stacked on each other, but both thin enough to not be too bulky or high. The tempurpedic underneath gives a nice firm edge, keeping my softer regular pillow raised just enough to keep a mask from hitting the mattress when I'm sleeping on my side. Head is on the edge of the pillow with mask kinda' hanging out over the edge, not hitting the pillow or mattress. Tempurpedic (or memory foam) pillows have always seemed too hard to me; thus, "the stack".

Actually, with my Breeze/nasal pillows I'm able to sleep on my side with my head anywhere on the pillow. I don't have to hang my head off the edge of a pillow when sleeping on my side with the Breeze. Love it!

Since you prefer to sleep on your stomach much of the time the Breeze might suit you well. I've tried a "stomach sleeping position" with my head turned to the side, just to see how the Breeze did that way, and it seemed fine.

If you want to stick with a traditional "covers the nose" nasal mask, the Activa by ResMed is very comfortable and non-leaky on many people. I have one and like it very much. The Activa is very forgiving of being smushed against by a pillow in any direction. The straps are worn much looser than with any other nasal masks.
