Now that I'm taping, I wonder if this will take the place of waxing my upper lip. LOL! I do roll my lips in and this does help keep them from getting sore. Also a few drops of oil will help take the tape off and sooth the skin. Not too much, especially for those who tend to break out.

I use the Nexcare tape. Not the paper kind. I use mine a little differently than most.
I cut 6 one inch peices, turn my lips inward and place them straight up and down, not across. I'm sure I look just like Hannibal Lechter in Silence of the Lambs!! But it works. I just remove it very slowly. I can take a peice or two off to get a sip of water or yell at the Yorkie who's bugging the heck outta me in the middle of the night.

Ten inches long! That would practically cover my mouth from ear to ear. I use two pieces, each about 3/4 to 1 inch long and about 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide, and make an X over my mouth. It keeps my mouth closed and barely takes anything to remove in the morning (I do use the 3M painter's tape).
Catnap, I can't thank you enough for this suggestion! For the past couple of nights, I've utilized your taping method, and it's working for me. I put on some type of lip moisturizer (gloss or Blistex ointment) and roll my lips inward before applying the tape. FWIW, I use the Nexcare Gentle Paper Tape, but I'll pick up some 3M Gentle Release blue painter's tape to use when I run out of what I already have.

I've been using a chinstrap since late last year, with success. But with the hotter weather now, I'm finding my chinstrap to be an uncomfortable addition to my headgear. I don't like the idea of taping my mouth closed, and I had previously tried two other methods discussed here. First was taping over my entire mouth, from side to side, with one 4-5" piece of tape. Didn't like that much. Then I tried putting a straight piece of tape about 4" long just under my lower lip and adding a "tab" of tape on either end to pull up on and affix to my cheeks (much like the Chin-Up Strips work), effectively keeping my lips together. But I found it was a lot of tape to pull off every morning, and I didn't like that, either. Your method is so much simpler and less of a fuss in the morning. There's far less tape to deal with and, if need be, I can still open the corners of my mouth a little (as I did last night, when I needed to cough) without disturbing the tape seal.

So thank you for posting about your taping method! I may go back to using a chinstrap when cooler weather permits, but for the summer months, I'll be utilizing your "X" solution.
