Mouth breather

Post by rtyler » Sun Sep 04, 2005 9:48 am

I am a new CPAP user and I have just figured out I cannot breath very well out of my nose. I wake up within a couple hours with the nasal pillow on and feel like I cannot breath, any suggestions? Should I try a FF mask, if so which one?

I like the ResMed Ultra Mirage FF when I have congestion and need to breathe through my mouth.

If it's sinus issues or enlarged turbinates inside the nose that cause the congestion for you, you might want to check out the "sinus and turbinate surgery" topics .... listed about halfway down the page at this link:

You didn't mention if you have a humidifier. It has different results for everybody but I personally spent one night without one and ended up with massive sinus constriction and dryness. Good Luck!

Same here, HappyHoser. I was so sleepy when I went to bed night before last that I forgot to turn on my humidifier and I am still stuffy, congested, sneezy with scratchy throat. And this was waking up after about 1-1/2 hrs, realizing what had happened because of the awful burning dryness in nose, mouth and throat and turning it on. So for me, warm humidity really makes a difference. Unwarmed humidity left me with the same symptoms. In my case, only a stand alone humidifier does the trick. I've tried both unheated and integrated humidifiers and both left me with stuffiness.

++++++++++++++++--

I use Humidaire. I really like it. Temp adjusts with a knob that has much greater range than just 1,2,or 3 and I find it much easier to get comfortable.

I really wanted to be able to use the integrated humidifier because of space limitations but it just didn't work for me. I still had all the problems I had with the passover. I really don't have room on my nightstand for it and the cpap. I am always afraid that I'm going to knock them off cause they hang over the edge so much. Does anyone know if it is possible to use a longer hose between the cpap and humidifier? If so then I could put it on the floor. Tried both of them on the floor and for me that just doesn't work. Causes too much leakage from mask.

I highly recommend the Humidaire. The first one I had was wonderful. Then I wanted to try the integrated so they let me try it. DME told me the Humidaire was a better humidifier than the integrated. I thought that they just didn't want to order it for me as they had none in stock. So I tried it for about a month. Hoped that I could get accustomed to it and would quit having problems. It never happened. When I went back to Humidaire, they gave me a used one at first. (I could tell. It was scratched on top and the knob squeeked terribly.) It did not heat nearly so well as the first one. I told them and they gave me back the first one that I had. (I could tell because it had a little spot on the heater.)

I believe RG uses F&P and has told me that she likes it also. I believe that she told me that she also prefers it over the integrated. Don't quote me on that tho. What about it RG? My memory hasn't fully returned yet. That is another of the benefits of cpap that I am anxiously awaiting.

BTW, DSM, if you happen to have a 420E laying around that you no longer have a use for in your collection, keep me in mind. Id be interested in purchasing if I could save up the money.
