Back pain & Leg cramps

Post by The Texan » Tue Mar 24, 2009 8:25 am

I have been 100% compliant since I started with the CPAP and actually have started feeling better, until recently. I now wake up during the night with a lower back pain that is excruciating and with leg cramps. If I get up, it all goes away, just happens when in the horizontal position. Is this a normal phase of the body readjusting to more oxygen or is this something that should be looked at by the Dr. We are leaving for the PNW in another week and I don't really want to delay the trip to see a Dr here. what do all you learned people have to say?

Hi 'The Texan' - This is my advice to you for back pain and leg cramps. Sleep on your side - preferably right side (better for the heart !)- with a Comfy Knee pillow (leg spacer - hourglass shaped) between your knees. Benefits of the knee pillow are: comfort for the lower back : hips and knees : aligns the legs : avoids lower back pain : prevents leg cramps : better blood circulation : keeps spine straight. Consult the Internet for more info. I make Knee Pillows and get lots of positive feedback. EVERYBODY should sleep with a KneePillow !
Keep your legs warm - long, warm pajama pants and socks. Your body goes colder during the night and then the cramps develop. The older you get, the colder you are - so dress up - you may also try a small blanket over your legs if you don't want your upper body warm. I'm not sure. but I think a calcium supplement also helps for leg cramps.
Hope you come right soon - greetings

Other than what Marietjie said, all I think is that it is not related to Cpap directly, unless you have deliberately been sleeping in an unnatural position 'on purpose' since starting Cpap. Oxygen or the lack of it would not have any bearing at all and I would try to see a neurologist or orthopedic doctor asap, if only to rule out anything serious. It may only be that you need a new mattress, but of course there are medical reasons for such symptoms, but none of them are likely to be a result of Cpap.

I agree that it probably isn't the CPAP that is causing the problems unless you maybe sleep longer in an odd position because you are now able to sleep.
As for the legs make sure you get potassium(banana's are good for that)
