Sandman dies after 3 weeks of use -- typical?

Post by Favedave » Fri Jan 23, 2009 7:02 pm

I bought a brand new Sandman Auto HC from cpap.com, and it died after a few weeks of use.

Now they want me to send it back for "repair." However, I was wondering if the Sandman has a history of problems and I should just get another brand?

Thanks for your feedback.

I have their 420e which has had a few lessor problems, but it is still running.

Hello & Welcome, Favedave! Glad you found this forum--SO much useful info and everyone here is so willing to help!

Sorry to hear about your Sandman! Man, 3 weeks, must have been a defective unit. Did see this post regarding a comment on reliability:

Dare I ask what happened or even the symptoms?

I have no reason to believe they are not a very good machine.

Luck of the draw, that's why they have a warranty. It always pays to have a backup plan, or two. Jim

When my GF was given an Rx for a machine this last summer I gave her my M series Auto and bought a new M series Pro from cpap.com. I had an on going problem that didn't correct itself, so this december I sent it in for repairs. A month later I had my machine back and it is running great now. Only cost me shipping to Houston. I'm impressed with the service I got from them. Sorry about your machine, but everything is subject to failure....everything.

What were the circumstances to cause it to die? Did it just stop working? What error code are you getting on the display?

Favedave,

Myself and another lady on this forum have had accidents where water got into the machine when the machine fell of the table or turned over while on the carpet. Our machines were damaged too. We have both sent them in for repair. Neither of us had ours very long either.

It is a great little machine and I really like it. The only problem is that because it is so light weight and the humidifier is integrated, it tips over easily at the slightest tug of the hose. Hopefully they will change this design for the humidifier. When I bought mine I didn't know they had an auto Sandman with a standalone humidifier or I would have gotten that instead.

I wrote a letter to the company describing the issues with the humidifier and how the machine so easily tips. I also contacted cpap.com who sent me a return number so I could send it back to them to have it repaired or sent back to company. I hope you bought your machine at cpap.com because they are pretty good.

They will have you write down what the problems are that you are having with it. What caused it to stop working, what error messages, etc.

I think it is important to also write to the company describing why it stopped working. They need to know if this is going to be a major issue (the machine tipping easy and humidifier leaking into it), before too many more people have their machines ruined. It might be cheaper for them to recall what has already been sold now, than to wait for many more months and have to replace even more.

Email cpap.com and let them know. They will get back to you in short order.

Take care,

Anne

Hi Favedave,

I have the Sandman Auto and haven't had any problems with it. I do have the integrated humidifer and since the machine seemed so light (and I had heard some horror stories about the Respironics M-Series humidifers), I set mine up on a piece of skid-free water-resistant stuff and also use hose management, so I've had no problems at all. I've had mine since the end of October.

I also have the M-Series and am keeping that as a backup.

Mindy
