Smoke removal from Autoset II - How to clean inside?

Post by Chico3_WB » Tue Dec 30, 2008 4:05 am

Newbie post.

Obtained a Resmed Autoset II that was supposed to be a 4 hr machine in a smoke free environment. It had 90 hours on it and smells of smoke. I've run the machine outside and it helped reduce the smoke smell. Before I spend the money to buy the secure torx bit to open the machine... Does anyone have any recommendations/instructions to prevent me from damaging the machine? As the unit is plastic I don't want to break clips or anything to affect the machine.

Being a used unit means no warranty issue but I don't want to impact the machines usefulness if something were to break while attempting to open the unit for a good cleaning.

Is there a product anyone would recommend specifically to remove the tar/oil from cigarettes that is safe for the type of plastic used to make this unit?

Thanks in advance for your help/advice.

Yer goin' overboard trying to take it apart. I've forgotten the product, I keeping thinking ozone but there was a lengthy discussion on clearing the smoke smell from CPAPs on a thread here sometime ago. I assume you remembered the obvious and have changed the filter, both before and after you let it run outside in the fresh air? And you're using a completely new hose?

Ozone is probably the only thing that will remove the smoke smell. You may be able to rent an ozone generator from places that rent equipment to hotels because ozone is used to remove the smoke smell from hotel rooms. Be careful with ozone because it is poisonous in concentrated amounts and it can deteriorate plastic. Ozone is unstable and it converts into standard oxygen rather quickly.

As I remember it, you CAN (and it does help) run your unit IN FRONT OF some form of deoderizer so that it sucks some of the deoderizing "fumes" thru your unit to help de-smoke it.

Thanks to both of you. I will look into the Ozone solution. It's probably cheaper and safer than opening the unit.

As weird as this sounds, run in in front of some fresh coffee. Open a can of coffee put a couple of scoops on a filter and sit in by the intake. It will take the smoke smell out and the coffee smell dissipates with in a day or so. I work in a industry that we do this on a regular basis and it works wonderful
