Re: How sleeping positions helps AHI numbers

Yes, gravity does work but head posture probably has more of an effect on compliance of the airway. If one extends the neck (tilts head backwards), it will tend to stretch the airway and reduce airway compliance, resisting collapse. Vice-versa if you tilt your head forward. What does "compliance of...

Re: How sleeping positions helps AHI numbers

Not a regular poster these days, but during my more active times on here (about 5-7 years ago)... Good to see you and thanks for that information. Thanks. I did enjoy my time on here all those years ago and had many interesting discussions/debates but life just got very busy. Plus, I changed career...

Re: How sleeping positions helps AHI numbers

Not a regular poster these days, but during my more active times on here (about 5-7 years ago) when I did a PhD in sleep research, a lot of my work looked at the effect of posture on OSA severity. There are several studies which have examined the effect of posture and head/neck position on OSA sever...

Re: Had a stress test this morning....

It's been a while since I last posted. For those who remember me, I did my PhD in sleep research investigating factors that may contribute to sleep apnea, particularly in obese males. After a couple of years of postdoc studies, the decision was made to move out of full-time research. Lack of funding...

Re: Squishing the belly increases AHI

Well, the next time you visit Australia to take on the challenge of being able to get >85% SE in a study of mine, you can also come and show the techs how the sleep studies should be run.

Re: Squishing the belly increases AHI

What's you lab's average patient sleep efficiency? Low to mid 90s. Nice. Is that common across all sleep centres though? I don't know, but since most references list 85% as the point at which insomnia begins (insert debate about definition of insomnia here), I think a lab needs to target ~>93% SE t...

Re: Squishing the belly increases AHI

OK, seriously... On an 8-hour record, you're looking at about 2.5 hours of wake time. That's HORRIBLE! How can you possibly assess sleep if the (or an) issue is sleep maintenance? Are you matching the patients' sleep times with lab Lights Out/On (i.e., don't start the test too early)? Is there a pa...

So does that mean we should call all these patients up and say "sorry, your sleep efficiency was terrible meaning your OSA is simply due to you h...

Re: Squishing the belly increases AHI

Ok, I have done a very quick calculation of sleep efficiency within each cuff condition. Correct my calculations if they are wrong. I calculated sleep efficiency as: sleep (in epochs)/total epochs under each cuff condition. This is what I got: Deflated: 69.1+/-5.1% Mid: 65.2+/-4.4% Max: 59.3+/-4.6%...

Re: Squishing the belly increases AHI

What would your inclusion/exclusion criteria be for the hypopneas? I would back all the way out and do full NPSG, baseline and then each pressure, so now you have like 4 nights total. Sure. Got any free time? Or got a student lined up to undertake it? That would be a PhD in itself. Sleep efficiency...

Re: Squishing the belly increases AHI

There is missing data in the example you put up (SWS stuff). Patient's were asked to buzz us if they wished to switch positions. We unplugged the pneumotach when they moved and we didn't analyze this data. I wasn't going to mention that, however, since you brought it up... What was the criteria to ...

Re: Squishing the belly increases AHI

How can I prove that the increased arousals weren't simply due to respiratory events OR due to making it harder for them to sleep? Do a baseline NPSG without all that stuff hangin' off 'em. Actually I might have a better idea. What about my first abdominal compression study, the one where I showed ...
