Okay, I tried the "sinus solution" recipe given on here & all I can say is OUCH times 10!!!! I about DIED!!! I was choking & in intense pain for over 10 minutes after only putting a few drops in my nostrils...I can't imagine putting a dropperful in! (I followed the directions exactly, too) Maybe my sinuses are overly sensitive, but there is no way I can tolerate that solution.
Is there a home made saline solution that is milder than the two tablespoons of salt to a quart of water one? And the alcohol??!...that was not good! I'm glad it works for some, but this was really bad on me. I must admit it cleared me up for awhile, but I could never go through that pain again. And I felt like a slug that had just been "salted"!! Any other milder solutions/suggestions would be most appreciated for this sensitive nose!

Go to the pharmacy and ask if they have SinusCleanse. It is a tiny little teapot with sachets of ultra fine salt. You put the sachet into the pot, add warm water and stir. You then tilt the head and pour half in one side and half in the other. I do it in the shower each day and in the short time I have been doing it I have managed to avoid nasal sprays, antihistamines and all that crap. It is quite mild and cleans the nose out very nicely. Give it a try.

Thanks Paul. Someone on here said that this "home made" solution was comparable to the SinusCleanse & that's why I tried it. I will give the store version a try. Does it contain alcohol, too? The first batch I made I added the alcohol...that was SO bad for me. It burned my entire sinus cavity & throat to high heaven. The second batch I left out the alcohol & it was still very bad. I'd like to get away from the nasal sprays & decongestants, too.

I had to use saline soutions myself as well. I had my nose operated on and I had to irrigate my nostrils 3 times a day, yes some of the soultion did hurt my nose when done without me been in shower!

Alcohol is not reccommend for saline sprays for the nose, as it stings like crazy!! Just salt and luke warm water is the vital ingredint for the soultion. I use it still to get rid of congestion of my nostrils or gunk that's present in my nose.

I use an over-the-counter product called "Simply Saline" It is an easy to use spray and there is no mixing! Best saline solution I've found yet!

Here is the formula given to me by my doctor when I had my seprum fixed.

1/3 teaspoon kosher or canning salt (no iodine)
1/3 teaspoon baking soda
1 pint of distilled water

use a bulb type nasal syringe (for babies) to squirt solution in nose.

It works for me. I don't think that I could ever stand using alcohol upmy nose.

I guess besides the great advise that we get on this forum, it's best not to assume that something that works for one will work for the other. We are all different.
As far as Sinucleanse in the humidifier, I am not sure. It is meant as a solution to rinse your sinuses, but inhaling in your lungs, I am not so sure.

Sorry guys, Thats the formula that works for me.. Remember at the end I said to use less salt if it bothers you. You can always add some water if its too strong..I'd realy rather just go swimming in the ocean . The closest salt water is a 1 hour plane ride away unless I go to Sea World... I just checked my post ...Somehow I put tablespoon instead of teaspoon..I'm really sorry about the typo..2 tsp in 1 qt of water ! Sorry ..Lavendel.. You somehow got the recipe for sinus pickler instead.. Remember what President Reagan said about the USSR.. Trust but verify... Sorry again guys...I should stick to making wine...$8.00 for 40 packets seems alot for a little salt and baking soda doesn't it..

I in no way was attacking you...just saying the solution really irritated me in a BIG way...now I know why! airheads comments were absolutely rude & maybe if he/she was as brilliant as they think they are, they might have caught the mistake & told me instead of insulting me. Anyway, I appreciate you correcting the error & now that I know the correct amounts, maybe I'll give it one more try!

I've been using another rinse which is basically the same as the Sinucleanse - premixed salt and baking soda, and a special bottle for squirting the mixture up into the sinuses (with this one you squirt it up one nostril and it comes streaming out the other one, to the delight of children everywhere!) One of the things it says in the pamphlet that comes with it is that plain water will actually hurt more than the salted water - so while too much salt might be a problem, so might too little.

With the prepackaged stuff I found that it hurt a bit the first two or three times I used it, but that now I don't experience any discomfort. Also, I found that getting the water to close to body temperature helps make it more comfortable.

I make my own saline mix like the one listed above with kosher salt, baking soda and distilled water.

This mixture only stays good for a week. If you put it in a spray bottle, just remember to sterilize after one week and start over.

This time of year can be tough on the ole sinus's..
