Memory Foam Mattress Toppers

Post by plr66 » Sat Nov 01, 2008 10:29 am

Just an FYI, as I've seen threads on this subject several times in the past few months. Target had them on sale (at least where I live) when I was there yesterday. The price I remember is a King 3" topper for $199--usually $250.

Curious--Does a 3" topper fit under a standard fitted bed sheet?

A lot of new fitted sheets come large enough to fit a mattress 16 inches tall - like 'pillow-top' mattresses. Some like them. Some don't. Check to see how tall the mattress-height seam is on your fitted sheet. If it's taller than your mattress, you should be okay.

A word about those foam mattress tops: My mom got one of those memory foam jobbies. It was okay at first, but after a while, it started to disintegrate. By the end of a year, just sitting on the bed raised a flurry of very fine particulate dust that was comprised of disintegrate foam bits. It was causing all sorts of lung problems. She ditched it after my sister showed her the problem. It could have been an off brand. It probably had melamine in it! Use these with some caution, IMHO.

Eeewww!!! Thanks for the warning! I'd not have thought of such a result, and I am/was considering trying one of these things. Any chance you could find out from your mom the brand or store?

I have purchased those egg crate type toppers for my bed to try and help with my back pain.. They are wonderful the first few months of laying on them.. But then little chunks come off and they do disintegrate. When I cannot take it anymore I threw it in the washer and that was a BIG disaster! The thing came all apart and into my washer... Spent awhile getting it all out.

Just buy a tempurpedic bed. The beds are expensive but worth every penny. Plus 20 year guarentee on mattress. I will never go back to a regular spring mattress. Plus no back pain the morning!

Tempurpedic beds are not for everyone! I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and I bought one. I had it for almost 8 weeks and sent it back because every day I had it I woke up with my joint pain worse than the day before. I kept thinking I would adjust. Fortunately I bought from a store with a 90 day money back guarantee! I bought a different bed (no memory foam) instead. The bed I ended up with cost as much as the Tempurpedic. I have had it for a year and it's way better for me.

I'm not saying Tempurpedic beds are not good for some people, even some people with any kind of arthritis or other pain issues.

I'm saying be sure the store has a return policy that is extensive enough for you to make sure it is right for you.

She bought it at Sams or Costco - one of those. Sorry, I can't be certain of the manufacturer. I'm glad to hear MichelleFL can back up the concern about disintegration. The worst part for my mom was that it was airborne particles that she couldn't easily see, and she'd been dealing with it for months before she realized what the problem was. She got a nice new bed that reclines and raises the knees, etc. She sleeps very well now.

One usually gets what they pay for ...
President-pretender, J. Biden, said "the DNC has built the largest voter fraud organization in US history". Too bad they didn’t build the smartest voter fraud organization and got caught.

I have found air mattress works wonders for me, i have had back pain for years and i can't take a regular mattress so i go to walmart or target and go to the camping section and get a queen size air mattress and put it on my bed my back pain has gone way down. I do have to replace it if my cat gets her little claws in it. But i dont care getting the pain to go away is the most important thing to me......They usually sell for around $20.00 depending on the size you get......

I got the 3" one from Target a couple of months ago. I love it. My husband hates it. I have arthritis and neurological issues that cause chronic pain. Before using this topper I woke up in pain every day. YMMV, but it has helped me tremendously. The one I got also has a pillow top on it. Everything is encased in a duvet like cover, so I don't think that the break down that others were talking about will be a big issue. I could be wrong though. So far we haven't noticed any problems with it other than my husband hates it. Oops.

We are looking into getting a sleep number bed, but this was a stop gap in that issue. We can't really afford the sleep number at the moment. HTH

Tempurpedic--the only way. Ditch the idea that a mattress is good for 20 yrs. Maybe 10-tops. No more. Like living in a hole. All the gunk--dust mites-hair etc etc plus the breakdown of the mattress. Eeeww

No plush bed needed to treat sleep apnea. Comfort only.
