Comfort Gel Boil & Fit

Post by luke » Thu Oct 23, 2008 9:45 am

Hello,
I was titrated recently on a Comfort-Gel nasal mask that seemed to work well with just some minor leaking (I think).
I noticed that the Comfort-Gel masks are advertised with the wording something like "boil and fit".
Can this be done now to improve the seal and what temp/time do you boil the silicone insert?
I asked the technician at the titration visit if you can do this and she said they fit good enough as is.
However I would like to get it as best as I can.

Anyone ?

Luke

The tech is probably dumb enough as is.

Although I have never used the Comfort-Gel, I beleive that is correct about the "boil-n-fit" ... just make sure you boil the mask and not your face

They should have given you a small booklet about comfort gel with instrustions and a DVD disk included it gives very specific instructions as the boil and fit process I did this with my mask after the second time I have acheived a very good fit .You neeed to call them and , tell them you or your insurance paid for this piece of information.

Mine came with a booklet and a CD with instructions on how to boil it although I haven't tried that yet, you need to make sure that you have the Comfort Gel mask that is boilable, some of them aren't! Goodluck and keep us posted with your results...

I just posted a review of my experience. Yes, I think that "out of the box", the gel probably helps with the seal. However, my experience with boil and fit was that the get flaps merely curled inward to respond to my facial features. I was hoping the gel pillow would flatten and get wider, not hold the same general shape and just bend inward.

I didn't sleep with the mask yet (before or after boiling).

You boil water, take off heat, toss the mask in for 5 mins, move the mask to cold water for 10 seconds, shake moisture off it, and slap it on your face. Sit like that for 5 minutes. Voila, all done.

For the ComfortGel nasal mask:

This is for the nasal mask, not the full face:

CustomIzIng the Comfortgel CushIon

Important! The headgear must be partially disconnected before you customize the gel cushion.

1. Prepare the Mask and Water. Disconnect the neckstraps by removing the swivel clips from their sockets.

Note: Do not allow headgear to get wet!

Fill a bowl with enough cold water to cover the entire mask cushion. SET ASIDE.

Fill a pan with enough water to cover the entire mask cushion. Place the pan over medium heat, and bring the water to a
boil. REMOVE THE PAN FROM THE HEAT.

CautIon! Do not place Gel Cushion into Microwave!

WarnIng! Water and contents may be hot.

2. Warm the Cushion. Hold the mask by headgear and place the mask cushion into the hot water. Let the mask soak for 4 minutes. Do not allow the headgear to get wet!

3. Cool the Cushion. Remove the mask from the hot water, and place it in the cold water. Let the mask cool for 10
seconds. Remove the mask from the cold water and shake any excess water from the mask.

IMPORTANT! Touch the mask cushion to be sure that it has cooled enough to prevent irritation or burning.

4. Re-form the Cushion. Position the mask over your nose, and press the mask cushion gently against your face.
Pull the headgear over your head, and connect the swivel clips.

Hmm... it strikes me that a very important part of this "boil n' fit" procedure would be to be in a laying down position when the mask is placed on the face for the fitting part. Gravity causes our faces to change shape from when we are in a seated position to laying down.

As I was reading through the thread something kept nagging me, what was I forgetting? This is it! When you lie down your face changes, even a subtle change can impact a good mask seal.

The comfort gel wore a hole in the bridge of my nose after about a week. I boiled it according to directions and there was a noticable difference. It took two weeks to wear out my nose. I didn't think it helped very much. However, what doesn't work for one, works for another. Good luck with your therapy.

I boil mine not to get a better fit, but to turn it back into it's original shape. My mask gets a little mushed in as I wear it and then I get leaks so I do the boil bit to reform it back to original shape and am good to go for awhile.
