Bug in the "also posted as" info

Post by ozij » Wed Oct 01, 2008 10:10 am

There's no way all those "also posted as" names in the list could have posted from the same IP. Something's broken.

Agreed. I see my username in this list.

I post from two different locations. My home 'net connection where the IP changes each day as I power cycle the modem and here at the office. I work for a web hosting company and have a unique IP address from a range we have exclusive rights to.

Maybe its registered users who have visited "X" rated sites in the last few hours, or for hours. Jim

It seems an impartial anonymous poster figured it out in that other thread...

OT Paul, I see you have a Mirage Quattro FF mask. How do you like yours? I am a newbie of about a month. I go a Quattro maks about 1 week an it is doing wonderfully. I can get a good seal it is about a comfortable as having a mask on your face can be. So I thought I would see if you are having good results with yours as well. Melinda

I moved from an Ultra Mirage F/F (used for 2.5 years) to a quattro & it is a dream compared to the UMFF.

It sits very well on my face, the forehead adjustment is now uesful, the mask is easy to dismantle for travel, it is sooo much quieter, also is easier to clean & replacing the seal looks a lot easier.

Bought a second as back up

DSM
xPAP and Quattro std mask (plus a pad-a-cheek anti-leak strap)

Ozij, where do you see that list? Where did you get the claim 'all posted from the same IP', which you doubt?

When somebody posts as anonymous, if there was any user post from the same ip before (there could be more than one different user previously posted from the same ip), the forum either picks one randomly or picks the most recent last one. I had reported this privately to admin as a potential 'impersonation' problem, but they thought it was not worth fixing...

Is it possible that list is simply the list of members who had logged in as guest and used an ip, which was used by more than one othere non-guess user?

It was showing up in "Guest" posts (in the side-bar beneath where the user name is/would b). However, I just checked a previous "Guest" post and the names weren't there, so it appears that it's been fixed.

A couple of so years ago - as a result of some fire wars and anonymous mud slinging - forum admin decided that any previously registered user who decided to post as guest will be identified by an "also posted as". It has usually worked very well technically - and socially as well.

I'm going to post this messsage after having logged out, so you can see what I mean. You'll find my user name in prenthesis in the sidebar.

I got the list from one of the guest posts on the day I started this thread. I have no reason to think the name is picked at random from an IP list.

Yep. Looks like they got it fixed. You're the only one listed.

ozij, The admin confirmed that the name is picked from the user name which used that ip. It may not be randomly picked, possibly the last one used if there is more than one. In your case, you may have a fixed ip, so it would match your name when you post as a guest or login as your real name. Even without a fixed ip, the ip may change anywhere from once a day to once every couple of weeks. But if somebody is using a dynamic ip, their ip changes from time to time. So when they post as a guest, the forum picks up the last used name of that ip, and that may be in error. In fact, I had PM'd somebody who posted as guest with an also posted as XX. I used that XX name to PM to, and XX told me the post was not by XX.

At that point I asked the admin, and that is when he confirmed what I described at the beginning. There is no other easy way for the forum to determine who you might be when you login as a guest, other than guessing from a possible common ip. I had suggested to modify the 'also posted as' to something like 'may be posted as, or somebody else' because it is good for us to know the current also posted as is not always correct!
