US healthcare the best?

I think our health-care system is great!

Where were you between November 15, 2007 and March 12, 2008?

A hearty welcome back to you.
Thanks, Rooster. It's good to be back. I hadn't realized quite the timeframe I was missing here . . . I was off working feverishly on a project I managed to procure funding for - fun stuff, really.

Things have been slow recently though, today especially. A weekend trip to Minneapolis was cancelled on account of icy/snowy roads between here and there.

Of more importance than my short abstinence . . ., some of the old regulars have taken a much longer hiatus.

Regards,
Bill

No it's not. There's widespread scientific fraud and abuse. There are drugs that don't work, or are dangerous. This man is from the Nordic Cochrane collaboration, and they review scientific data and they don't have nice things to say.

Some people are not getting the help they need, some people are getting too much medicine and it's killing/hurting them. Medicine has changed from treating the sick to "prevention" and a lot of these prevention tests just don't work and some are down right harmful.

You're responding to a 2008 note, from someone long gone from the forum... the dates of posting are at the top of each note FYI. But your note is still valid!

It used to be better, but we got it fixed, we put the government in charge of it. Jim

I worry that instead of finding market-based solutions for the problems, some folks think that government control is the solution.

Well, I worked for the “government” for thirty years, as a scientist.

I can tell you that you do not want government in charge of controlling your access to health care. If we ever get, what some call “socialized” medicine, you will see looooong lines, vast shortages, and people who care less about you than a lab rat.

I’ve seen it. I lived a year and a half in England, and I was truly stunned about how serious conditions requiring surgery (appendicitis in one case) were delayed for … many months.

I’ve also read with interest posts from OSA patients in England and Canada, and how many of them had phenomenally long waits for diagnoses, and very limited choices and options.

I agree with Goofproof and ChicagoGranny,

My family doctor of 25 years retired suddenly. I am finding it very difficult to find a family doctor or an internist who will accept patients on Medicare, even with a great Medigap policy. Scary!

A little perspective: babies born in the US have an anticipated life span that is 34th in the world.
Could be access to medical care, education, or proper nutrition; or any combination.

So that's it... and I thought it was because I was simply living in an area where the majority of doctors accept Medicare. Maybe a hit or two would be a good idea for you, Jim.

Last time I lived in Calif was 1966, left there for a years vacation in beautiful South Viet Nam. I don't have enough time or money to try California again, maybe if I sold pot? Jim

In my area I know of several doctors...usually PCP in private practice... that have stopped accepting new Medicare patients.

My wife and I keep losing our doctors......two in less than 5 years. They keep quitting and/or taking other jobs out of the area......for better money or just to get a reprieve from "the grind".
So far, no problems about them taking Medicare, but the big hospital conglomerates which have all these satellite offices can't keep them or won't pay them enough to stay. In 2011 - 2012, there were three doctors who left this one office. Our last one left last Friday and now we're waiting to see who they get in next.

May have to start raising chickens, so we will have something useful to trade for medical care. If the government taxed us in chickens, they could give us vouchers for medical care chickens, we all could have free healthcare. No-one would have to work, and the healthy, could live on the eggs the chickens laid. Win, win, except for the Chickens. Jim

That's happening in my area as well... probably all around the country. Fortunately, there are still many doctors here, and many who take medicare. I do see names of doctors on the door and suddenly they disappear. I think the doctors who started the initial practice stay around; the newer doctors do seem to come and go.
