can cpap be harmful
can cpap be harmful
I have had 3 sleep studies with very different results. 1st study I only had an hour of sleep and they said I had an AHI of 52. So I got a second opinion and had another sleep study which said 7.0 AHI with 3 hours of sleep. Then I was in a clinical trial for insomnia got a free sleep study and it was 1.7 AHI. These were all HYPOPNEAS in all the studies. I tried CPAP after the first study and hated it so I stopped. I have gained some weight and have been waking up out of breath and really tired so I am going for a titration study to see if CPAP can be tolerated. Now...........if my AHI is really only 1 or 2 like the last study can CPAP hurt me? Am I being paranoid?
CPAP Harmful
Hello,
This inconsistency in your results themselves should be addressed. Why the variances? An AHI as low as you mention may not warrant CPAP therapy. Is you doctor suggesting you use a CPAP?

weight
Some of the variancies are weight related. I actually wanted to try CPAP because I had gained 20 pounds after the study that said I only 1-2 AHI. My weight went from 190 to 210, and thought my apneas were increasing due to increased fatigue and waking up out of breath. I guess I will tell the tech the situation.
One of the great things about CPAP is that is a non-invasive treatment with no real side effects. So, to answer your original question, no, CPAP almost certainly will not harm you. But if you don't need it, why have it? The real question is, do you need it? If you are actually having 52 events an hour, you do. If only 1.7, you probably don't. I think this is a decision for you to make in consultation with your Dr. Some people have been sent home with an Auto pap set at a wide range for a week or two to collect data for their Dr to make a determination. Talk it over with your Dr and see what he says.

You're being paranoid.
How would breathing good, oxygenated air while you sleep harm you?

Hmmm. Perhaps you accidentally put chlorine bleach in lieu of water in your heated humidifier?Wulfman wrote:You're being paranoid.

You put your CPAP machine on a shelf 7 feet above your head and in the night thrash about and pull it down on your head?
You're on fire?
You have a tracheotomy?
There are ways.
Liam, just trying to be helpful.

Was there any mention of leg movements during ANY of your studies? You did get copies of each study, didn't you?
With the info you've provided it is difficult at best to reach an intelligent conclusion - you make no mention of any other health problems or medications??
But Wulfman said it best- If I had to guess I'd say psychosis?

I have no doubt, how I sleep affects every waking moment.
I am making progress-NOW I remember that I can't remember
If this isn’t rocket science why are there so many spaceshots?

Hmm... I guess that's why they make the standard hose only 6 feet long, to prevent such accidents...
DMS, just trying to be funny...

Those of us with data-capable machines better watch out. One day the computers are going to turn on us and our XPAP's will get us in the middle of the night. That's why I don't associate with those of the robot race.
Gotta go, I've run out of tin foil and I need some more hats!!!

Hi aw23,
I think it is always smart to question any kind of "treatment" that one is receiving. Sure, lots of people think lots of things are safe, and then we find out later that they have some sort of negative effects.
CPAP has been around for awhile, which makes me feel a little more comfortable with its safety.
Just do alot of research on your questions about it, and maybe it will help you feel more comfortable with it. Or maybe you will find something that helps you decide not to use it. I had the same concerns as you, but it seems like the possible consequences of not using it, outweigh any hazzards (which I haven't read about any yet.) So I think its good that you are questioning things.
good luck to you.
