Hi all.....I'm a new (exhausted) joiner

I am new at this so please bear with me. I have recently been diagnosed with sleep apnea and just starting to research information and ran across this group. I have not been fitted for a CPAP yet but will be doing so this month. I am sorry to say that I was disappointed in my DR. and the information that I recieved or should I say, lack of info that I was given about sleep apnea. I have already learned more by reading all the info from this group than my DR. I have also had a heart attack in Dec. 2001. Now that I know I have sleep apnea, my health issues make more sence and are a little more understandable. I am interested in hearing more of others that have heart conditions with sleep apnea and treatments that are used besides the CPAP such as nutrition.

PS. I hope that I am doing all of this correctly...If not please let me know

Hi, Harmony and welcome to cpaptalk.com!

You did just fine on your first post.....hopefully your first post of many. You've found a great place for info and support. I'm still relatively new to CPAP (in my case, 3.5 months on APAP with a PB 420E, Ultramirage FF mask and humidifier), and yep, this is about the greatest place to find solid information. Read away and enjoy.....and realize you are not alone!

This therapy WORKS!

Welcome, Harmony. Glad to have you here.

I too am new (just 6 nights on my CPAP), but it became obvious that this was a special place with just a couple visits. Folks have been helpful and informative.

And yes, you'll learn more here than you will from most doctors. And that's a shame... But at least we have a place to come for advice.

I won't even pretend to be able to give advice; i'm still learning what all those sleep study numbers mean. But if it's encouragement ya need, just holler! I can honestly say that in as little as 6 nights with a CPAP, i'm waking more rested. I'm not yet sleeping thru the night, mind you. But even so, I feel better in the morning than I have in years.

So hang in there.

I'm LDuyer, trying hard not to add to my member totals. Ha!

Harmony,

Welcome. Funny thing about this forum, everyone is able to contribute something, simply by being here, whether a newbie, nearly-newbie, or not-so-newbie. You too, you help us not only remember what it's like, but remind us of what's important. And the single most important thing I've gleemed from this forum is to not give up, to keep trying to deal with this. We all hope that everything works out for you from day one of your treatment, but if you do or don't, lots of people here can help.

You might use the search feature, and the keyword links listed at the bottom of people's posts. Even though I've been here since November, I still have lots to learn, and I've done things wrong, like sticking with a crappy doctor. One test of your doctor might be how he reacts to you asking questions based on what you learn here, like about the auto cpaps, the different types of masks, etc. If the doctor isn't open to your questions or poo-poos some of the equipment, maybe you should go for a second doctor. Your equipment will require a prescription, and if your doctor isn't willing to be flexible, then you might want to find another.

You mentioned the heart problems. I would suggest you keep having regular checkups with your heart doctor, and keep him posted about the sleep apnea. If he's a good and reasonable doctor, he might be able to help, and maybe even recommend another sleep doctor. You never know. Regardless, I think it's wise you keep being checked for your heart.

I developed high blood pressure only a year before being diagnosed for sleep apnea, and it likely came on because of the apnea. So I too should take my own advice.

Keep asking questions and reading the different topics. It really does help.

Good luck.

Linda

Linda,

Thanks for the support and suggestions. I just typed a note to you and lost it to the computer monster. If you got it great, if not oh well, this one is short and sweet. I can already tell the cpaptalk.com is going to be addicting.
