When I reinsert the smart card into the reader, I am getting frequent errors because the smart card is not lining up properly in the reader. Is there any way to correct this problem without going to the DME?

A couple of thoughts.
Have you tried cleaning the gold area on the card with alcohol?
If this is still your original card, maybe it's time for a new one.....they aren't that expensive. Doesn't hurt to have a spare or two around.
