Mask causing a slight swelling along upper lip line

Post by smilburn » Tue May 17, 2005 11:57 pm

Hi! Please bear with me, cause I'm new at this forum stuff. I've been on a CPAP machine for about 4 years now, and up until now, I've never really had any problems with my mask or my machine. Lately, however, I have been developing a dry "bump" along part of my upper lip. I've adjusted my mask several times, and I continue to have the problem. The mask doesn't seem to be leaking air (I have the "over the head" mask with nasal pillows.) The bump is sort of like a small (1/4 inch long) swelling along the upper lip line and it is dry and tends to be a little numb. If I don't wear my mask for a couple of nights running, the swelling decreases and the sensation comes back completely. The problem is that I can't go more than two nights in a row without my CPAP before I get the daytime "sleepies" again. Anyone out there have any similar problems? Suggestions??? I'd appreciate any insight or help. Thanks!

I don't have any similar symptom, but I'd suggest finding an alternative mask to wear. Many on here have 2 or 3 they use in a rotation. I think your symptom is a good example of why it's a good idea to rotate masks.

Thanks for the tip about rotating masks. I had never thought about that! Do you have any experience with the CPAP PRO "no mask" mask?

I do not, although I find it interesting and have considered it. There was a thread that went around the board a while back discussing it. I asked my Sleep Doc about it and she only commented that in the past her experience with any oral appliance, indicated a concern about developing mouth sores over time. But in a rotation... and with the newer materials this might be less of an issue.

You might want to search the board for CPAP Pro and read through the past strings on it.
