DAYTIME TIREDNESS

i used cpap at level 16 an i still feel fired in the day,they first told me that i have sleep apnea and i have it seveare,so what can i do,i can't raise the pressure any higher can i,i first started at 14 then i went to 16 and i still feel tired can i go any higher

How long have you been using the machine? I've been told that it's not an instant fix. That it could take some weeks for your wiped-out feeling at the end of the day to subside.

I agree. I went through the same thing, but my very knowledgeable dr. told me this is normal. Often you will feel wonderful after the frist week of using the CPAP & then your body goes through some adjustments & you can feel as bad or worse than you did before. I thought my levels needed to be changed, too, but this wasn't the case. I just needed to hang in there & after about 6 weeks my body adjusted & I've been doing well ever since. You have to remember your body is going from almost zero sleep (in my case) to suddenly getting stage 4 sleep for the first time ever! That's a big adjustment! I also had such vivid dreams, in color at first. They were awesome! I loved going to sleep just to have the amazing dreams! Then the dreams starting getting fewer & fewer & were no longer in color. Sounds silly, but I mentioned it to my dr & he said this is normal! He said your body has never had the sleep it needed & when you are first on the CPAP you go through an intense period of "catch up". As your body becomes more rested your dreams become less intense. I will say also that I've never once had a nightmare while using the CPAP. Interesting!

I was once told that it takes 60 days to catch up on 2 days of not sleeping. Can you imagine what all of us have had to endure? Or will have to endure to catch up on our sleep.

I've been experiencing EDS and will ask my doctor about it when I go for my next visit.

Haven't read the board for awhile. Saw sleepdoc and he said to hang in there some more. I am in week five of cpap. I am not totally exhausted like I was in the first weeks. But I am still waking up tired, so have not had the big rest like some experience. What I do find encouraging about this thread is the mention of dreams. I have been dreaming quite a bit, and that must mean I am getting some good rem sleep, right?

I have been on CPAP since the end of August. I felt really good for about the first five weeks, then had a major setback. Turns out it was my mask. I had to go from a nasal mask to a full face mask. I am feeling better again. Although, I still count on one really bad day a week at work where I can't hardly function. Don't know why. Maybe other things entering into this big picture.

Hang in there. One day you will probably look back and alll of a sudden notice how much better you are feeling. It helps when people at work and such start commenting on how much better you look!! What a pick-me-up!

I'm not a doctor, but it's my understanding that there is very little correlation between how severe a person's sleep apnea is and what pressure has to be used. In other words, "severe" apnea doesn't necessarily mean the person needs "high" pressure. A person can have very severe apnea (measured by how many events they have during each hour - averaged out to be their AHI), yet need only a relatively low pressure to keep their throat open. Or, a person could have very mild sleep apnea, yet need a high pressure for the way their throat closes. I think the pressure that is prescribed depends a lot more on how "collapsible" the throat is - not on how "severe" the apnea problem is.

Yes, machines can be adjusted higher. Mine goes up to twenty. In the higher numbers you will probably need to use a BiPap instead of a Cpap as it allows for a lower air pressure when you exhale making it comfortable to do so, while still keeping your air passages open. I was also at 14, then 16, and still didn't feel like I was told I should feel. I got up to 20 and am finally feeling better. Dani

If your daytime sleepiness does not go away after a few months on cpap you may also have another problem.

This is fairly common with sleep apnea patients.
Some things it could be are diabetes (check your blood sugar, if high can make you sleepy), narcolepsy, and what my doctor calls idiopathic hypersomnia.

There is a test called a multiple sleep latency, oh shoot I can't remember the entire correct name. Essentially one goes to the sleep lab during the day. Your are hooked up with all the lovely electrodes and put down for a nap. You are woken up, and this is repeated about four times. It is determined how fast one falls asleep and how often.

I am afraid if you do have narcolepsy or hypersomnia the medicine is expensive, so I hope your sleep is just catching up. Good Luck
