Microwave popcorn and lung disease

Post by sleepngo » Wed Sep 05, 2007 6:37 pm

Just found out that one of my favorite snacks, extra butter Microwave popcorn contains a chemical compound called Diacetyl that can cause lung disease, that can be fatal. It can happen during the popping process. The fumes given off cause Bronchiocitis Obliterans, a lung disease that is often fatal. I went to http://www.popweaver.com web site and they say that their new products no longer contain the ingredient Diacetyl and that it is safe to eat now. I hope so, I love Microwave popcorn.

I've never been able to stand the smell of microwave popcorn. Wonder if that's why.

I still pop popcorn the somewhat old-fashion way, in a pot on the stove, stand there and shake the pan across the burner whilst holding the cover on. Then melt the butter and pour it over the popcorn in the bowl. I've been looking for one of those "screen" type poppers for the fireplace when I think of it whilst out shopping but haven't found one yet. Of course, the difficulty in finding one is probably because I HATE to shop. I run in, buy what I want and get out.

At home I make regular popcorn with a hot air popper. It's very easy and no chemicals! For a topping I melt butter and mix it half with olive oil. I add other herbs. I used to use olive oil and chili powder and that was good, too.

At work I sometimes make popcorn in the microwave. I use only the plain stuff. Paul Newman has a brand with nothing else added. I then add the butter and olive oil and other stuff.

I love popcorn!

I was quite surprised to find that Orville Redenbacher's makes an organic microwave buttered popcorn. It's quite good too.
