Mouth Breathers and Hybrid??

Post by atruvirgo » Wed Jun 27, 2007 4:22 pm

How do mouth breathers do with the Hybrid??? I can usually breathe out of my nose but apparently I am leaking. My hubby says I make mouth noises. Now with aerophagia too...that's a whole lot of noise!

I was leaking air from my mouth which caused me to have high AHI numbers.
A full-face mask (including the hybrid) will cure this.
I got the hybrid specifically for this reason and... it has worked extremely well for me. My mouth is covered up and air can leak out of it and I don't lose therapeutic pressure. I think most other hybrid users will agree with this.

I've actually found that the design of the Hybrid, at least for me, actually helps me keep my mouth closed...Something about the location of the straps and the chin thingy, I think.

I still occasionally mouth breathe, especially if my nasal passages get stuffed up, but overall, I'm breathing more through the nostrils now.

I was having a problem with a high-pitched leak waking me up...not a big leak, just very high frequency. I did a little experiment with some handcream. I have called Glysomed, which contains silicone. I spread a little of the Glysomed on the soft silicone mouthpiece and no more high-pitched whine!

BTW, Glysomed is a great handcream for those who are allergic to most others. I believe RiteAid or some other chain carries it. And it comes in unscented.

I agree. I find that my mouth doesn't get as dry with the Hybrid as with the UMFF and the ResMed Liberty. I think it is because the chin flap helps keep my mouth closed at least part of the night. I find that I can easily mouth breathe if I want though, the chin flap must just be gently supporting the chin. The Hybrid is quite comfortable even at my high pressure, make sure you use the new headgear.

Cheers!

+1 here! I can't say enough good things about the Hybrid. I breathe through both nose and mouth (not at the same time ) and the Hybrid allows me to do either with no problems.

I also agree that its design does encourage one to close their mouth.

That's why I never cut my chinflap when that was all the rage.
It supports my jaw to help me nose breath most of the night, but mouth breath when I want to and sometimes, a person just wants to breathe out of their mouth.I love my Hybrid. The Liberty doesnt come close and seems like a cheap knock off to me after being on my Hybrid.

I should add that if you use a good thick chinstrap with your Liberty it can work, but that was one of the problems with it and without a good chinstrap holding the mask secure, the tabs can come off at night. I'm actually still working with mine but will buy another Hybrid when the new codes take affect.

I mouth breathe no matter what type of mask I use.
In my experience, the Hybrid was the very worst for dry mouth.
I NEVER had that problem with my Ultra Mirage FF, or my Soyala FF.
I was able to compensate for the dryness somewhat on the Hybrid, by turning the heated humidifier all the way up, but the problem with that was that all that extra humidity made my nose stuffy. So now my Hybrid is sitting in the Bummer Box™ with all those other masks of mine that I'll probably not use again.

Wow, not only was my mouth dry from the soyola, I hyperventilated from breathing my own co2. That's why the darn mask is so quiet, it's exhaust is the lowest on the chart.
I won't even touch on the UMFF because my dry mouth was the least of my problems, but this board heard enough of my UMFF complaints.
My mouth gets a little dry with the hybrid, buy less so than most FF masks for me. My pressure is as high as it gets, so I need a good FF mask. I would have to say the Hybrid is the best mask I've been on, bar none. Sorry it didn't work for you. Sell it here. They get snapped up quickly.

Not all masks are for all people. Our totally opposite results is proof of that.
I think your hyperventilating experience with the Soyala would be considered unusual though. In spite of some of the shortcomings of the Hybrid, it's certainly not the worst mask out there.
Good luck with it, if it works for YOU, that's what REALLY matters the most.

Are you talking about the Soyala nasal or FF? My brother tried the Soyala nasal mask and his ears popped like when he used to dive, from all that back pressure.

Last exam I asked a respiratory guy about it because I wondered if I was really breathing my own c02 if the holes weren't big enough and was told that the masks (the full face) don't need the holes as much because the air will exchange anyway, I guess from the leak rate.Somnotech solely depends on the leak rate around the swivel, which isn't much, but it's a very good mask because some people swear by it. I had it on over an hour and had to switch and ended up using the new mojo I brought, because that "no hole technology" is a bit too advanced for me.
I tend to think the bigger the exhaust holes , the better, but these new masks are starting to make their holes smaller and smaller, have you noticed?
Hyperventalinting is in the head. You only think you can't breathe, but if you relax, you breath fine. I went through that my first year. Sometimes it means you need a bipap.

Sorry something happened to the thread above..lost part of the thread.

If anyone knows someone wanting to unload a small Hybrid PLEASE ask them to contact me. My doctor is a butt and so is the DME. When I asked about the Hybrid they looked at me like I was talking about a car! Today I told the RT I wanted a machne that would give me my leak rate and AHI she said an "AHI"? What is that? I said you don;t know what that means, and she said NO I have never heard that term. Oh my gosh..after 2 months on xpap can I possibly know more than the RT? Dang scarey!!!!!
