Post Nasal Drip

Post by BuffaloAl » Mon Apr 18, 2005 3:00 pm

Has anyone found a worthwhile treatment/ magic solution for PND? Every night I lie down and... drip drip cough.

I've tried sue-do-fed ( I don't think I want to get "Pseud" for using a brand name here) and not only does it NOT work but it keeps me up at night too.

Sometimes antihistamines work, for half the night anyway. but I don't have other allergy symptoms such as sneezing, puffy eyes etc.

Thanks

I know what you're going through. Have you tried Flonase or any other of the steriod type nasal sprays. They help some people. They didn't help me. I am currently seeing an ENT and just had a cat scan done of my sinuses. He hasn't gotten back with me yet. He also says my turbinates or something like that are severely swollen. He did an allergy test and said I had no major allergies. That stands to reason since Benadryl or Allegra or Claritin never worked. Some people can turn up the heat on their humidifiers and it helps. I turned mine all the way up and down and all positions in between and it didn't help me. Maybe it will work for you. As soon as I see the ENT again, I'll let you know what he says.

I have had a runny nose and sneezing for over 5 months. After reading this board for the last week I realized I should check the setting on my humidifier. I did not have the advantage of having a tech come to the house and set up the machine and show me how to use it. Anyway, I figured out that the humidifier was set at 1. Gee, I should have realized it wasn't high since most mornings the water level did not change much. But with nothing to compare to, never really followed up with it. Needless to say, I set it at 4 on saturday night and I immediately experienced a marked improvement in the sneezing and runny nose area. Today I only had two episodes of sneezing. Now I don't have to dread getting up in the morning. Hope it continues to improve. so definately play with settings on the humidifier. It may help.

It seems like adjusting the humidifier does help a lot of people, just not me, but definitely try it. I used some of those nasal strips last night and I think they helped a little. Something so simple that I really had considered it before. I saw them in my hubby's bathroom before I went to bed and decided oh why not just give it a try. It didn't completely solve the problem but it did seem to help a little bit. Maybe that's the way I'll have to deal with it--just a little thing here and there. There may not be one "fix" for the problem. Hope everyone gets some relief.

Like a few others on the board, I am a big proponent of putting some salt in warm water and snorting it up your nose and into your sinuses at least daily. I even notice when I am coming down with a cold, if I do it 2-3 times a day, I will stop the cold in it's tracks.
I also saw an allergist, with the complaint that none of the prescription or over the counter allergy meds seemed to help. He did the extended test on my arm, for every tree, grass, rodent, cockroach,,,you name it. I was allergic to absolutely nothing. He then asked if I had heartburn or reflux very often. Seemed a strange jump, but I told him I usually kept Rolaids or Tums close by. He told me that the burning in the esophagus triggers your sinuses to produce tons of mucous to soothe the burning. He put me on Nexium, and my PND is MUCH improved.
Not sure any of this will help, but it was my 2 cents worth!
