I live in the Dallas area which is one of the "fattest" cities. I saw the report about a month ago. It has a lot to do with how many fast food restaurants are in a square mile and how many outdoor and exercise facilities per square mile or something like that are available. My daughter moved to Seattle last year after growing up in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. She says it is certainly different. We have fast food chains and restaurants on every corner. I have traveled all over the U. S. and we do have great food here and a lot of it is of the very fattening variety (example, Tex-Mex). It's so hot here a lot of the year that we don't have a lot of jogging trails or bicycle lanes like San Diego or Seattle. We do most of our exercise indoors walking around shopping in the malls. (I'm just kidding but my daughter in Seattle also read in a report somewhere that Dallas has more shopping centers per square mile than any other major city in the U.S. I don't know how accurate that is but I can believe it.) If you do very much outside activity here in the late spring or summer, you would probably have a heat stroke. My daughter in Seattle also said that there were not a lot of shopping malls up there and they were small in comparison to what she's used to. The Dallas area is building more fitness gyms but that's a yuppie thing to me. All of it added together may make us one of the "fattest cities" in the U.S. but I'll take Texas any time.

Does this mean that if I would move to Houston I'd have a chance of being considered "svelt"

If so, I'm packing my bags!

Pardon my ignorance, but what does "svelt" mean?

(let's hope this reply does not show up more than once! If anyone out there knows why this has been suddenly happening please clue me in)

So as not to get anything wrong here I'll briefly quote Encarta College Dictionary:

svelte /svelt, sfelt/ adj graceful and slender in figure or contour...

... so I guess most of us (me included) will have to avoid using that word then

Buffalo is neither fit nor fat. The reason is simple. In December January and February we spend an hour a day after work shoveling the driveway. Then we are too tired to make dinner. So we order a bucket of chicken wings.
