WHAT is comfortable about the "comfort gel"????

General Discussion on any topic relating to CPAP and/or Sleep Apnea.

If you have tried the ComfortGel Mask, do you/did you like it?

LOVE IT. I had virtually no problems with it.

WHAT is comfortable about the "comfort gel"????

Post by jennie_len » Fri Mar 30, 2007 2:40 pm

I am totally new to all of this, and I have already expressed how unbelievably miserable I am with the ComfortGel mask. I hate it. HATE IT!!!!! It hurts, my face is sore no matter what I adjust, and there is never a night I don't wake up at least once an hour (and with the mask thrown off my face).

My point is not to complain, but to find out what other mask(s) are suggested. Please keep in mind 2 things: 1) I have sever OSA...to the point that I need very high amounts of pressure and cannot use something meant for milder cases 2) I have a very petite face and small nose/nostrils.

I have been curious about the nose pillow one (?) but I am thinking that maybe it is not strong enough for me or too large for my baby nose.

I am ready to do just about anything in order to get this corrected...and the sleep clinic continues to brush me off about a new mask until I have given it a much longer chance.

Any ideas? Every bit of trouble that ppl have written about having the masks I have already experienced at full extent. I am worn out and feel a million times worse than I ever did with no treatment at all.

Any advice welcome!!!

Jennie, I've never used the comfort gel myself, but it is notorious around here for being uncomfortable. Just so you know, there are dozens of kinds of nasal masks, pillows, and full face masks - so you're definitely not stuck with just a couple of options. Unfortunately, it's hard to recommend a mask to someone, because there are so many differently sized and shaped faces in the world. What fits mine perfectly may not fit yours at all. What we all have to go through is a trial and error period - keep trying different masks/pillows til you find one you like.

Some of the more popular nasal pillows systems around here are the ComfortLite2, the TwilightNP (my own personal favorite), the Breeze, and the Swift - but these are only the tip of the iceberg. Hang in there, and don't give up!

A nasal mask has problems that a FF mask doesn't. You don't have to worry about mouthbreathing with a FF mask, so if you can get one to stop leaking and be comfortable you are a winner.

I used a ComfortFull for a year because I "Knew " I was a mouthbreather. After a year I got a used ComfortGel "M", knowing that it wouldn't work for me, I tested it anyway, and it worked, I didn't rework the Gel or anything, and in that year using the FF mask, I had cured myself of mouthbreathing, (By the practice of parking my tongue forward and on the roof of my mouth, and holding it there by suction.)

My AHI is as good on the Gel as the FF Mask, I tried the Activa, and didn't do as good as the Gel, so I went back to the Gel. (with the Activa the headgear pulled the mask up too high at the night went on.) Everyone is different in what it takes to get by, sometimes we get surprised. Jim
