One Week and Counting! CPAP vs APAP

Post by SailorBoy » Mon Mar 28, 2005 8:19 am

Like Barbie accessories, I am adding to my sleepPAP collection:

Resmed Swift nasal pillows
GoodKnight 420E + Humidifier + Software

I am still mouthbreathing a couple times a night, but trying things. A headband under my chin is almost doing the trick. The humidifier adds to the comfort level.

I have been playing with APAP pressure. My 'scrip was 12 cm with a CFLEX. But, inveterate tinkerer I, I used the software to see what would happen with a 5-14 range.

Guess what? Far more comfortable (duh). Five little apneas knocked down by a pressure bump. But still, five is more than zero, which is what i get with 12 cm. So last night I bumped it to 8 minimum. About as comfortable, and still get 3 apneas.

I guess the doc knew what he was doing. 12 will keep me ap free, but I think that there is pretty much no difference between 3 and 0, not when compared to 200 (untreated hypopnea and apnea per night).

I'll reveal my unauthorized tinkering to the DME suppliers RT when I go in for the follow-up! Hope I don't get in trouble!
I think it makes me look like a dashing scuba diver, don't you?

I think you will find that your nitely apnea episodes will vary nite to nite. It all depends on how deeply you slept, body position etc. Having a more comfortable pressure with a slightly higher ahi seems to me not to be a probelm. If your in the 1-5 range you doin good. I struggle to be under 8-10.
