How long till life begins?

Post by SleepySue » Sun Mar 27, 2005 1:32 pm

First, thanks to all who have taken time to post. Some of the information I have gleaned has been very helpful. A little here and a little there has sure made this CPAP thing a lot easier to get used to

On to the question: When did some of you start feeling relief? What "signs" clued you in that you were getting better?

I know this take a while and I am committed to the treatment, just curious!

Thanks!

Hi SleepySue and welcome
There is a small minority of people who are lucky enough to get an immediate effect, but for most it takes some time to feel the benefit. It takes a while to get used to sleeping with all the equipment, and there may also be a sleep debt to repay, ie some catching up to do.
In my case, I noticed a gradual improvement after about 4 weeks and started to feel much better after about 8 weeks. It was my family who noticed the difference first. My wife said the snoring had gone (and boy was she grateful!) and the kids said I wasn't so grouchy.
Why not keep a journal for the first few weeks? Looking back at how you felt a few weeks or even a few days ago might help you realise there's progress.
Good luck

Hi Sleepy Sue,
Everyone is different. I had a terrible time getting to the point where I could tolerate the ttreatment, but once I finally did relief came subtly, but rapidly. The first thing I noticed was I wasn't half dead by 3 in the afternoon any more, and I wasn't fighting sleep behind the wheel of my car on the way home. All the little things added up to my reclaiming my life over a 2-3 month period. My hardest job was to make a committment to putting that darned hose on every night and leaving it on. Once you lick that and can sleep, you are on your way!
Best wishes!

Sue, I was one of the luky ones. I just started on CPAP 2 weeks ago. I noticed a big improvement after 2 - 3 nights. I really noticed it when I took my first drive (through traffic - 2 1/2 hours - should have been one hour). I was amazingly awake...I can't say I have ever felt that before. Anyway, I still have good days and bad days...not always totally awake - like today - struggled a bit today. Best of luck to you.
