2 cpap machines

Post by Bobbo12345 » Wed Mar 06, 2024 6:38 am

I have 2 Cpap a machines, 1 resmed airsense10 and 1 Phillips dream station 2. Settings are the same for both. Same mask is used for both machines. I always get a great mask fit score with Phillips (100%) and a poor fit with resmed (9-12 points out of 20)
The resmed is quieter and it doesn’t seem I have major leaks with it, I once got a score of 0 out of 20. Is the machine bad? It is fairly new and have always gotten poor mask fits with it.

Thank you

You can test your machines' pressures by creating a home-made manometer. You'll need:

1.) A 2 foot (65cm) stick
2.) A 4foot (1m) piece of clear tubing, 10mm OD (3/8")
3.) Some clear tape
4.) A measuring device (tape, ruler etc)
5.) Some water

You can combine the stick and the measuring device into a ruler if you like. Make a loop of the tubing and tape it along the stick, both open ends at the top... the bottom should be not kinked. Fill the tube half with water, you want both levels to meet at the center of the stick. Tape or otherwise seal one end of the loop to your CPAP hose, I used a grommet from an auto store, tape will work, some leaking is OK.

Hold the manometer vertical. Set your machine to 4cm CPAP no ramp no EPR/Flex and start it. Take your ruler/tape and measure the difference between the water levels in the tubing, record it. Set your machine to 10 15, 20cm, record the measurements.

Specs for Resmed is within 5% of nominal. If you don't have a metric ruler take it carefully in inches and convert using an online (or OS calculator) converter.
Percentage Error = ((Setting – Actual)/ Actual) x 100.

I tested my two Airsense 10's against each other after I replaced the motor in the older one. They were both in spec, it seemed the old one was closer than the new one.

If you are comparing your Philips to the Resmed MyAir, they are not calculated the same. The MyAir is counting all leaks while I believe the Philips is counting only large leaks.

I also have an Air Sense 10 Auto and a Dream Station 2 and as you have found there is a difference in the reported leakage which I have a also experienced. I've just come to ignore the difference in the leakage numbers knowing they report it differently as LSAT noted.

When I first got the AS10 I was perceiving what seemed a difference in the pressure it delivered versus the DS2. I bought a digital manometer from Amazon and set about checking the pressures of each machine.
The reads were performed at the end of the hose with the manometer probe through a rubber plug/stopper. The DS2 mask check pressure is less that that of the AS10, DS2 at 14.3 cm/H2O and the AS10 at 19 cm/H2O. The pressure reads between machines was pretty much dead on as compared to the machines display reading.

ResMed machines report only EXCESS leaks which is defined as leaks above ResMed's line in the sand of 24 L/min.
Respironics machines report TOTAL leak and total leak is defined as EXCESS leak AND the intentional leak (vent rate).

So people can't compare leak numbers between the two machine brands because the leak reported is different.
