Resmed S9 turns itself off

Post by zebras » Wed Apr 25, 2018 12:56 am

Hello everyone!

Recently, my S9 starts turning itself off in the middle of the night (3-5am). Now, I think I can exclude
- Smartstart: Turned it off
- Power outage
I actually have a constant camera monitoring set up and can see that I suddenly awake. The CPAP shuts itself off and restarts when smartstart is on after about five minutes. I am curious: Is anybody else experiencing this problem? Seems a little dangerous.
I just ordered a new machine from a different brand...

How many hours of use on the S9?

I assume that you have made sure that the connection cables to the back of the S9 are snug?

We have heard of it before with the S9 but mainly had to do with the connecting cables being loose.
Of course not impossible for it to fail but usually when that happens it just shuts off and won't come back on again.
Might be a sensor...maybe.

If out of warranty and low hour and you want to have it checked out you can give acbio.com a call and find out how much to diagnose and fix.

I had a respironics 60 bipap that started shutting off several times a night, I had to turn auto start on so it would kick back on. Two causes were mentioned. A very large leak that made the machine think I had taken the mask off or a machine failure, I used sleepyhead and ruled out the large leak being the cause of shutdown. I had been using the machine for 7 years so I got a new machine, no more shut downs.
Post back to let us know what happens.

If SmartStart is turned off....the machine won't turn itself back on if a big leak happens...it will just keep blowing.

So if it turns itself off...and smart start is off...it's not a big leak issue...it's a power issue either in the plug/wall socket/or innards of the machine power issue.

Power supplies fail over time. Maybe a new power supply & cord will make a difference. Would it be possible to borrow those things and try a couple of nights?

It might be the power brick...and sometimes a nice friendly DME would let someone swap out a power supply and see if that is the problem or not.
You can buy them but that brick isn't cheap and no guarantee that is the problem.

I was going to disable auto-off, but it appears that it's already off.

One thing to try is to completely unplug the unit for a few minutes and then plug it in again. Sometimes a reboot will fix mysterious problems. I don't know how likely this is to help, but it's quite simple to try.

If that fails, try turning on "auto off." That maybe counter-intuitive, but try it anyhow.

OP has a S9 machine...ResMed...it doesn't have a separate auto off or auto on like your machine.
What ResMed machines have is SmartStart and no way to separate the on/off part of it.
He's already said that turning SmartStart off didn't help...the machine still shut itself off out of the blue.

In that case, change the auto off/on feature. I meant to turn change the auto-off so if auto-on is not separate, you'll need to change the combined feature.

Well...he already tried that didn't he? Did you miss this part in his very first post?

gWow, thanks for all the answers! It just seems confusing as it repeatedly shuts off once a night.
I am currently working in China for a short time and just decided to buy a Chinese machine instead of solving the puzzle :)
I was originally thinking about getting a new machine back home, but this one actually looks very well made (450$ including humidifier and mask) :D

Just in case someone experiences the same problem as I was also searching this forum for answers:
- I have a camera that monitors my sleep hooked up on the same outlet. Power failure seems unlikely
- Sleepyhead and camera do not indicate leak.
- Camera shows that the machine shuts off for no reason and I suddenly awake (actually looks scary. Not dying, but just suddenly being 100% awake)
I don't know the reason and don't feel like investigating, but it appears that these things can happen for apparently no reason.

Short update:
Swapping out the SD card seems to resolve the issue. S9 sometimes has problems accepting SD cards and will refuse to work.

Also I do not recommend using a cheaper machine from a Chinese manufacturer. It looks good, but the algorithm is simply not the same. Even though I chose the same setting, it would often overcorrect pressure and work against my breathing causing arousals as a result. I think it's fascinating how much the small things can influence our sleep. I didn't know about it first, only after I felt tired and down after a week, I carefully looked into the video tapes.

I know this post is old, but I bought a Resmed S9 4 years ago (almost 5 which is when I am eligible with the insurance to purchase a new machine) Well, it shuts down because of a loose power cable. Intermittently on different nights and seems to get worse. I know it is the connection on the machine side of it because I can wiggle the power supply connector and it comes back on and will work normal for sometimes minutes....sometimes hours or days. I have been through 3 power supplies (One I bought brand new) and all of them do this some to a lesser degree. That darned connector is just not reliable. I remember having this issue within 2 months of buying the machine new (I took it to my Medical supply place and of course, since the problem didn't happen all the time it worked fine there) But after just short of 5 years it has become unusable. At this point I am just going to have to not use my cpap for a couple of months until I can get a new machine because what it would cost to have it repaired is close to the cost of a new machine....Just thought I would throw this out there I tried duct tape and sitting the machine on top of the cable so that it loops out in the back (this puts just enough pressure on the connection to make it work the best, but not 100% of the time) If anyone has any other fixes or has dealt with this before it would be much appreciated. This seems to be a royal pain in the tuckus. LOL Have a great day! -Mike
